Portagers run away from
Lakers
ONEKAMA — After weathering an initial blow from Bear
Lake, the Onekama boys basketball team ran away with a 90-61 West
Michigan D League win Friday night over the Lakers.
Five Portagers scored in double figures, led by Quinn
Matthews and Jarett Sovereign, each with 18, while Matthews added six
steals and Sovereign seven rebounds. Bryce Reckow scored 17 with nine
assists, seven boards, four steals, and three blocks while Wyatt Szpliet
scored 13 and Derek Hobart 11.
Bear Lake (5-5, 4-4 WMD), led by Bryson Waller’s 22
points, drilled six triples in the first quarter for a 22-15 lead.
Onekama (7-4, 6-3 WMD), however, responded with 22 points in the second,
26 in the third, and 27 in the fourth. |
The win gives Onekama a season sweep over the Lakers,
which had dominated the rivalry in recent years.
“There’s no question that for our kids this is a huge
game,” Onekama coach Jim Hunter said. “It’s been a while since we beat
them (before this season), so to take two from them, and take the second
convincingly at home shows a lot of hard work and good effort from
everybody.”
The Onekama junior varsity team moved to 10-1 on the year
with a 64-53 win over the Lakers. Jon Eno led the Portagers with 23
points.
