Onekama's 8th graders won 2nd place at the Northern Division West Michigan D League Boys Jr. High Basketball Tournament

Saturday, January 29th Results

On Saturday the 2/05/05 Onekama 7th grade team took on MCE Cardinals at 10:00 a.m. in the consolation game of the Northern WMD tournament. The cardinals came out flying and at the half our Portagers were down by a score of 6-21. The Cardinals kept the pace up in the second half and our Portagers lost by a score 19-38. Leading the young Portagers attack was Gus Lagerquist with 9, Thomas Koon netted 4, and Chase Callaway, Jonathon Nesburg and Dan Gillespie all added 2 points each as the Portagers close out their season in what has been a tough season with weather canceling games that couldn't be made and etc.. Congratulations to these fine young ball players and their coach John Burtch for all the time and effort. And Thank you to the fans for the support in a some what of a odd basketball season.

In the 7th grade Championship game the Frankfort Panthers beat the Brethren Bobcats by a score of 42-27 to take home the champioship plaque.

In the 8th grade consolation game The Brethren Bobcats beat the MCE Cardinals by a score of 35-29.

In the 8th grade Championship game for the Northern WMD tournament our Onekama Portagers took on the Bear Lakers at Onekama at 1:00 p..m. on 2/05/05 The Lakers jumped out to a 5-11 lead at the end of the 1st quarter but our Portagers came back in the 2nd quarter to cut the lead down to one at the half 19-20. The 2nd half turned into a very exciting game with the Portagers taking the lead different times through out the 2nd half and had the lead with less then 2 minutes to go. But the Lakers hit a couple shots at the end of the game to just pull out a 34-37 win. Bear Lake received the 1st place Championship plaque and our up and coming Portagers took home the 2nd place plaque. Pacing the young Portagers in a great basketball game was Aaron Fisher with 10 points, Levi Capper connected for 7, Ryan Miller netted 6, Slade Hunter nailed 5, Zac Gilbert added 4 and Drew Griswold 2. As these young men and Coach Dennis Manke closed out a good season. Congratulation on your 2nd place finish and for your efforts and time during the season. And thanks to the parents, grandparents and fans for their support during the season.
