Bear Lake sweeps rival Onekama

ONEKAMA — Two sweeps and a tournament title are the results of Bear Lake’s last three times on the court.

It’s probably safe to say: The Lakers are on a roll.

The latest to the list was their 25-9, 25-10, 25-9 West Michigan D League win over rival Onekama on Tuesday. Long service runs and a heavy attack up front helped keep Bear Lake in the driver’s seat most of the night.

“We just had great communication,” said Lakers coach Amy Falk. “They worked really well together in the (Pentwater) tournament this weekend, and I think they just came in ready again.”

Two days after topping the eight-team field in Pentwater, Emileigh Ferguson and Hannah Harrington again led the Lakers against the Portagers.

Ferguson had a team-high 13 kills with 11 points from the service line, which included five aces. Harrington’s serve gave Onekama fits throughout en route to 21 points and two aces, to go with four kills.

Also for Bear Lake, McKenna Fink had 11 points with four aces and a team-high 12 assists. Jill Johnson led the Lakers in digs with seven.

“They’re just really working hard at what we’re doing; their skills are improving as we go,” Falk said. “We want to keep the momentum, and keep the positive attitude, which is a huge thing.”

Ferguson strung together 10 straight points from the service line early in the first game to set the tone for the night. Her run ended with her team up 17-3.

In the second set, Harrington sparked her team to a 7-0 start and then helped finish it with a five-point run when the service rotation got back around to her.

Bear Lake pulled away early in the third set, and Harrington again closed it out, this time with nine straight points from the line.

“Bear Lake did a wonderful job,” Onekama coach Sherri Slater said of the defeat. “We just need to defend better against those hard hits and those good serves to set it up and get a play going on it.

“We didn’t have much for service runs, and couldn’t get momentum going that way. We just couldn’t get into any rhythm.”

Hailey Kott led the Portagers with a pair of kills while Tawny Kott had an ace and a kill.
