Onekama rally falls short at Frankfort

FRANKFORT — The Frankfort football team jumped out to an 18-0 lead and held off an Onekama rally for a 30-20 win on Friday night.

The Panthers (4-5) recovered a pair of onside kicks in the first half and converted to build the 18-point lead before the Portagers (3-6) battled back.

“The rest of the game was just a dog fight,” said Onekama coach Jim Hunter.

Onekama’s Randy Pienta returned an onside attempt about 50 yards for a touchdown to get Onekama on the scoreboard.

After another Frankfort score, Tyler Johnson and Pienta hooked up for about a 45-yard touchdown pass and Johnson added the 2-point conversion run to pull the Portagers within 24-14 at halftime.

Johnson’s touchdown run pulled the Portagers within four points in the second half, but Frankfort converted on a fourth-and-long late and ended up punching it in to put the game away.

“After that initial shell shock, I thought we really outplayed them the rest of the game,” Hunter said, “we just dug too big of a hole.”
