ONEKAMA — The Onekama boys basketball team blew open a
close game by outscoring Mason County Eastern 26-2 in the third quarter
en route to a 73-55 West Michigan D League win on Thursday.
Quinn Matthews led the Portagers (12-6, 10-4 WMD) with 20
points, Bryce Reckow had 19 points, 12 assists and seven rebounds and
Jarett Sovereign finished with 14 points and nine rebounds.
Onekama led 22-11 after the first quarter but MCE pulled
within four at halftime at 33-29.
“We kind of got a little flat-footed and they came back,”
said Onekama coach Jim Hunter. “They shot well and they can shoot well.
We played sloppy and they played hard, to their credit. They were flying
around.” |
The Portagers responded with a huge third quarter to put
the game out of reach.
“After talking about it at the half, the defense picked
up, we scored a lot of easy baskets off transition,” Hunter said. “Bryce
had a monster game with assists and most of them where in transition.
“When we do that, we’re tough. Offensively we can be a
real challenge for people if we have that kind of wherewithal where
we’ve got the running game open, working good in transition and also
inside-outside on offense.”
The Onekama JV team beat MCE 71-41 while Caleb Wisniski
led the Portagers with 18 points.
