GOBLES — The Onekama girls
track team took seventh place among 15 teams in Saturday’s
Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association’s Division 4
team state meet at Gobles High School.
The Portagers gathered 1003.5 points paced by six top-four
finishes. Hillsdale Academy won the MITCA D4 team meet with a
total of 1653 points.
“I think it was great for the kids to see that kind of
competition and it was especially good for the girls who didn’t
make it to state (individually) to kind of see what it’s all
about,” said Onekama girls coach Bonnie Brown. “I told the girls
that if we finished in the top 10, I’d be very happy. Then we
got home and looked online to see how many schools there are in
D4, total, and there’s 151. To be seventh out of that many is
just excellent.”
Onekama’s Jaylee Brown picked up her team’s lone first-place
finish by leaping 9-foot-6 in the pole vault while teammate Yumi
Babinec took second in the 100-meter hurdles in the time of 17
seconds flat. Babinec also took one of the Portagers' two
third-place spots in the 300-meter hurdles (49.25) while
freshman Nisha Collins placed third in the long jump with a leap
of 15-8 3/4.
Onekama’s 400- and 3,200-meter relay teams each finished fourth.
Brown, Danielle Ward, Babinec and Breanna Fink ran the 400 in
the time of 53.51 while Taylor Anderson, Faith Moerdyk, Kelly
Babcock and Kirsten Santa finished the 3,200 in 11:07.37.
Brown said perhaps the highlight of the meet was the
Olympic-like introduction of the competing teams, in which the
Portagers entered the track bearing a team flag prior to the
playing of the Star Spangled Banner.
“It was awesome,” Brown said. “I think that was the highlight of
the day — the parade of athletes. All the teams assembled
outside the track and walked in, kind of like the Oylmpics.
“Everybody who went had a great time,” she added. “It was a good
bonding experience for all of them.”
The Portagers earned their invitation to Saturday’s MITCA meet
by winning a team regional title on Saturday, May 21 in
Brethren, where they also qualified seven girls for the Michigan
High School Athletic Association’s state meet this weekend in
Jenison.
On Saturday, Brown will be competing in the pole vault, Babinec
in the both hurdle events, Collins in the long jump and Tobi
Schoedel in the 1,600-meter run.
The 400-meter relay team of Brown, Ward, Babinec and Fink will
also run in state as will the 1,600-meter team
of Babinec, Schoedel, Ward and Anderson.
