Congratulations to the golf team on their victory over Walkerville in the WMD Conference opening golf match of the 2011 golf season. Alex Welch was low man for Onekama with a 42, Quinn Matthews shot a 44, Derek Hobart a 47 and Sean Lowe a 56. Paul Cunningham and Elizabeth Bergren both shot but did not post scores that factored into the team score.  News Advocate article

Fri. April 29 vs. Frankfort at Pinecroft
 
The Onekama golf team lost a match against Frankfort on Friday at Pinecroft Golf Course, 175-202. Alex Welch led the Portagers with a 9-over 47, Quinn Matthews shot 49, Derek Hobart 50 and Brandon Bohannon rounded out the scorers with a 56.
It was the first match in more than two weeks for the Portagers, who have been kept off the course because of poor weather and were a bit rusty on Friday. “It was apparent that we hadn’t had a match since the 12th of April,” said Onekama coach Mary Jo Zadow. (from News Advocate)

The Portagers suffered their first league loss as they were edged by Pentwater, 189-198.
Derek Hobart paced Onekama with a 47, followed by Alex Welch (48), Sean Lowe (49) and Quinn Matthews (54).  “It was a very tough night,” said Onekama coach Mary Jo Zadow, whose team was playing just its third match of the season. “We look to rebound as the weather hopefully improves.”

Lake City Invitational
Onekama finished with a score of 353 and was led by Alex Welch, who shot a 79 to tie for 10th. Sean Lowe (87), Quinn Matthews (90) and Derek Hobart (97) completed the Portagers’ score. “I was very pleased, especially for Alex, who did a masterful job of managing the course today,” said Onekama coach Mary Jo Zadow.

Jam at Manistee County Club
The April 26th WMD Golf Jamboree at County Highlands cancelled because of poor weather conditions will be made up on May 10th at the Manistee Golf & Country Club. We will play beginning at 1:00p.m. and play the April 26th schedule on the front nine. The originally set May 10th schedule of competition will be played on the back nine.
Thurs. May 12  Heathlands Portagers turned in a season-low score in their 167-182 win against Brethren. Alex Welch shot a 38, Derek Hobart 39, Quinn Matthews 42 and Sean Lowe 48. “It’s always nice to win,” said Onekama coach Mary Jo Zadow, “and especially nice to win over Brethren/Bear Lake, a team with which we enjoy a friendly rivalry.”

WMD tourney 18 holes

Onekama took fourth at County Highlands with a score of 402. Quinn Matthews led the way with a 93, followed by Alex Welch (98), Paul Cunningham (105) and Derek Hobart (106). Congratulations to Quinn Matthews for earning a top ten medal at the WMD Conference Golf match held at Bear Lake Highlands yesterday.  Coach Mary Jo Zadow was happy Cunningham shot a personal best.

Thu. May 19 at Manton High School Emerald Vale 4:30

The Brethren and Onekama golf teams tied for first place in a tri-meet at Emerald Vale on Thursday. The Portagers and Bobcats both shot 184, while Manton turned in a score of 201. Onekama’s Derek Hobart carded a 39 for match medalist honors and tied his season low score. Alex Welch shot a 40, Quinn Matthews 47 and Elizabeth Bergren 58 to round out the score for the Portagers, who had just four players.  “I was really pleased the four of them could put a team score of 184 together to tie the score of Brethren/Bear Lake,” said Onekama coach Mary Jo Zadow. “Derek and Alex both shot well today.”

Heathlands
Onekama’s Alex Welch paced his team with a 40 while Derek Hobart and Quinn Matthews each shot 47 and senior Paul Cunningham rounded out the scoring with a personal best 52.
“I was pleased with Alex’s score at 40,” Onekama coach Mary Jo Zadow said. “I think Derek and Quinn were a little disappointed with their scores tonight, but Paul seemed to be happy with his.” The Sabers finished the day with a team total of 162. Onekama shot a 186 and the Chippewas a 193.

Thu., June 2  Districts Onekama’s Quinn Matthews shot a season-best 82 (10-over par) and Derek Hobart 88 as both qualified for the regional round. Alex Welch’s 99 was one stroke shy of qualifying as an individual, Paul Cunningham turned in a 129 to round out the Portagers’ score, while Elizabeth Bergren shot a 132. "I'm disappointed that the team didn't make it and even more disappointed that Alex finished just one stroke away from qualifying," said Coach Zadow. "But, I'm very happy for Quinn and Derek who both shot very well today."

Golf Terms for Parents new to the game

There are some changes to the WMD Conference line up this year. Baldwin and Crossroads do not have teams this year, so the conference now consists of, Onekama, MCC, Brethren/Bear Lake, Custer, Walkerville and Pentwater. When playing Conference Jamborees, all teams will be present, however it will be dual matches only.
