MOUNT PLEASANT — While most Onekama
students are enjoying a week away from school for spring break, 16
of them spent a chunk of their time off at Wednesday’s Central
Michigan University’s Indoor Invitational.
The Portagers captured 13 medals, including a trio of golds in the
Division 3 and 4 non-team scored event, which was originally
scheduled for Wednesday, March 23, before being postponed due to
inclement weather. Onekama was one of 14 teams to enter athletes.
“I was pleasantly pleased with both the girls and the boys,” Onekama
girls coach Bonnie Brown said of the nine girls and seven boys the
team fielded. “They all did awesome.”
Onekama’s Jaylee Brown, Nisha Collins and Yumi Babinec each took
first-place finishes to pace the girls, while the 3,200-meter relay
team of John Schoedel, Bobby Meyers, John Girven and Rease Heiler
took home a silver for the boys.

Brown won the pole vault with a vault of
9-feet. Collins won the long jump with a leap of 15-1 and Babinec
finished first in the 60-meter dash in 10.20. The boys relay team
finished second in the time of 10:14.
“It’s going to be an exciting year,” Brown said. “The freshmen we had
really stepped up for it being the first meet as varsity runners, and we
were pleased overall with the kids that showed up and I’m sure they were
happy with their performances for the first time out.”
Also medaling for the girls were the 3,200-meter relay team of Tobi
Schoedel, Faith Moerdyk, Tristen Gleason and Kirsten Santa (second,
11:35); the 1,600-meter relay team of Schoedel, Babinec, Moerdyk and
Collins (third, 4:46); Breanna Fink in the 60-meter dash (third, 8.79)
and 200-meter dash (fourth, 30.59); and Danielle Ward in the 60-meter
dash (fourth, 9.08) and 200-meter dash (fourth, 30.73).
Also medaling for the boys were Heiler in the 800-meter run (third,
2:19), Tyler Fogarty in the pole vault (fourth, 11-6) and Raul Torres in
the shot put (fifth, 38-8). |
