As the smallest school in attendance,
Onekama’s boys and girls teams certainly held their own.
The boys took 13th with four points while the girls placed 12th with 14.
“There were a lot of big schools here and we’ve got to be the smallest
one,” Portagers boys coach Anthony Torres said. “I think everyone we had
here PRed. That’s all you can ask.
“I like coming to meets like this, because it lets the kids see a type
of competition that can only help them drop their time. It’s sort of
like an early regional meet for them.”
The Portager boys placed fifth in two events with Lewis Bartlett in the
high jump (5-9) and Tyler Fogarty in the 200-meter dash (24.06).
“I’m just happy to have medals here,” girls
coach Bonnie Brown said of competing against larger schools “We had a
decent day. There’s been a lot of hard work with no pay off for a while,
so this was good. I told the kids I’m not sure they even realize what
type of competition they’re up against here. They did great.”
Onekama’s Nisha Collins paced the girls with a
second-place leap in the long jump of 16-10 while the Portagers added
points with two fifth-place finishes and a pair of sixth-place times. |
