BEAR LAKE — It took just one trip to the
plate for Onekama to blow open its Division 4 district quarterfinal
game against Bear Lake.
Shortly after, however, Mother Nature unleashed an offensive of her
own that neither team could weather.
Not long after the Portagers’ 11-run outburst in the third inning, a
severe thunderstorm blew through Bear Lake Tuesday afternoon. Heavy
rain and fierce winds quickly rendered the field unplayable, which
resulted in the game being suspended during the bottom of the third
inning with Onekama leading 12-3. The game is scheduled to resume
today at Bear Lake at 4:30 p.m.
“Anytime you’ve got the momentum and you’ve got it going forward,
the last thing you want is a delay,” said Onekama coach Phil
Sedelmaier. “This is not what we want. But, we knew this was a
chance we were going to take today playing. At least five innings
must be completed for a seven-inning game to be official.
Bear Lake coach Garrett Waller was also
unhappy with the way things turned out, but like Sedelmaier,
admitted there was nothing that could be done differently.
“I don’t like that I have to spend the
night down (nine runs), I’ll tell you that,” he said. “But, what are
you going to do? The weather came in and obviously we can’t play.”
The game began under sunny skies with a strong breeze that blew
infield dust across the diamond and turned popups into anything but
an easy outs. The Portagers struck first as Brooke Sedelmaier hit a
one-out double and scored on a sacrifice by Nicole Slater. The
Lakers evened the score in the bottom of the first as Katelyn Adams
scored on a wild pitch, then took a 2-1 lead in the second on Adams’
two-out RBI bunt.
