ONEKAMA — Portager coach Phil
Sedelmaier knew his pitcher, Emily Bergren, threw well in Onekama’s
12-3 nightcap victory over Brethren to salvage a series split.
But it wasn’t until he double checked his book, when he realized
just how shiny of a gem it was.
Bergren completed her second game of the night in impressive fashion
by stringing together a no-hitter after allowing just three in her
team’s 5-4 loss in the opener.
“Oh wow, she did,” he said after skimming the stat sheet, failing to
find a hit to her name. “Three strikeouts and no hits." Bergren's
hitless outing notched the first victory of the season for the
Portagers.At the Plate,
Onekama scored six runs in the second and four in the third to grab
a comfortable lead.
The Portagers’ were paced by Brooke
Sedelmaier who batted 2-for-2 with a triple and two RBIs, Nicole Slater
was 2-for-2 with a double, Jennica Mathieu was 2-for-2 with a double and
four RBIs and Sierra Warner added two hits.
After a three-hit opener, the Bobcats just couldn’t connect in the
latter part of the doubleheader.
“Bergren pitched well,” said Brethren coach Erin Swiatlowski. “She
stayed composed. That’s great for her as a pitcher, but discouraging for
us as a team and me as a coach.
“It was a completely different night from the last time we played.
Against Bear Lake, we had 17 hits in eight innings and today we put up
three total.”
In the opener, the Portagers were the ones who fell into a bit of a rut
at the plate.
After a hot start, capped by Mathieu’s two-run home run over the center
field fence in the first inning, Brethren pitcher Lexi Lakso put the
clamps on the Onekama offense as the Bobcats came back from a 4-1
deficit to win. |
“We had three hits the last four
innings and six hits the first two,” Sedelmaier said. “Lexi did a good
job mixing her pitches up. She kept us off balance after the first two
innings. She’s got a nice changeup that makes you think.

“Overall the girls played pretty good,” Sedelmaier said. “The only thing
that’s hurting us a bit right now is our inexperience. We know we can
hit the ball, we just need to be more selective at hitting good pitches.
“I’ve really stressed to the girls, good hitters hit good pitches. They
really responded to that the second game.” |
