Athletic Boosters Present Certificates to Scholar Athletes

At the Onekama School Board Meeting Monday, June 9th 2008, Dennis Zupin, Vice President of the Onekama Athletic Boosters, gave out the Scholar Athlete of the 4th marking period to Elizabeth Schoedel and Thomas Koon.

Elizabeth Schoedel is the daughter of Kathy & John Schoedel. Elizabeth will be a junior at Onekama in the fall. She has been involved in Track and Cross Country the past two seasons, named Rookie of the Year in track, was Vice President of her sophomore class, and member of Onekama National Honor Society. Elizabeth’s other activities include 4-H, Trinity Lutheran Church Youth Group. Her future plans are to attend WSCC after graduating from high school.

Thomas Koon is the son of Sally & Tom Koon. Thomas will be a junior at Onekama in the fall. Thomas has been involved in Football, Basketball and Baseball the past two seasons. He will be Vice President of the Junior Class. Thomas is a member of the National Honor Society. His other activities include being a Boy Scout of Troop 63 Onekama, 4-H and helping umpire youth baseball and softball in the summer months. His future plans are to attend college.

 

Criteria for Scholar Athlete

The Athletic Boosters ask the coaches of the qualifying marking period to nominate a male and/or female athlete from their sport.  All nominations are then turned into Duane Keith, athletic director, and Gina Hagen, Principal. 

The criteria for these nominations are Consideration of GPA, Citizenship, Team/Community Contribution, and Sportsmanship/Conduct. 

The awardees are then presented a scholar athlete medal for their varsity jacket. A certificate by the athletic boosters is presented at the next school board meeting following the selection process. All in all there will be 8 scholar athletes per school year (4 Male, 4 Female).
