Athletic Boosters Present Certificates to Scholar Athletes

At the January School Board meeting Dennis Zupin gave out the Onekama Athlete Booster Scholar Athlete for the first marking periods. Recipients were Alyssa Cole and Zach Yonkers.

Zach Yonkers, son of Tammy Ware and John Yonkers II, has been active in JV and Varsity Football.

He received All conference 11th grade Honorable Mention Lineman and 12th grade MSAC First Team Lineman

Zach has been president of his class since 6th grade. He was Class Representative during his Freshmen and Senior years. Zach is the president of SADD.

Zach has been active in the National Honor Society. This year he is the treasurer. Last year he became a member.

Zach has been a part of Student Council for all four of his high school years. This year he is a Vice President.

He works at Grand Rental, Big Al's and Victorian City Car Port.  Snowboarding is his hobby.

Zach plans to attend Ferris State University to study X ray and Ultrasound.

Alyssa Cole, daughter of Lizabeth Lott and Robert Lott, has been in Volleyball, Basketball, Track and Softball for four years. She also participated  in Dance Team and Cheerleading for one year.

Alyssa was All Conference 2nd Team Track, High Jump Honorable Mention, and 1st Team 1600 Relay Team

Other awards: Coaches Award Softball, Most Kills/Spikes Volleyball, and Most Steals in Basketball.

Alyssa has been involved in SADD for 4 years.  She is a two year member of Honor Society.

Her other Activities include mentoring Future Stars and Young Spikers. She has been on the Quiz Bowl team.

Alyssa's future plans include Nursing at West Shore Community College then Pre-Med at Central Michigan.

 

 

 

 

Criteria for Scholar Athlete

The Athletic Boosters ask the coaches of the qualifying marking period to nominate a male and/or female athlete from their sport.  All nominations are then turned into Duane Keith, athletic director, and Gina Hagen, Principal. 

The criteria for these nominations are Consideration of GPA, Citizenship, Team/Community Contribution, and Sportsmanship/Conduct. 

The awardees are then presented a scholar athlete medal for their varsity jacket. A certificate by the athletic boosters is presented at the next school board meeting following the selection process. All in all there will be 8 scholar athletes per school year (4 Male, 4 Female).
