Coach Dale Miller, Travis Berklund (OHS); Chris Smith (OHS); Wiley Heller (FHS); Stephanie Griffen (FHS); and Monica Higgley (BLH) all Onekama Ski Team Members, pose for a snap shot before pulling out of the Onekama High School parking lot at 6:30 A.M, Dec.5th Colorado bound. Mrs. Griffen volunteered her suburban and time to drive the members to the Grand Rapids airport, where they flew to Chicago and then on to Denver. From Denver, Colorado they had about a 1 & 1/2 hour drive to Keystone Resort.

I'm sure this is one time that parents had no problem arousing their teens out of bed at 5:00 a.m. , for the kids knew they were Colorado bound! Coach Dale Miller stepped in and took back over the coaching position this fall and what a job he has done to date! The teams have been dryland training rigorously and when most thought it was too late to get the team out to Colorado for training, he managed to put together an itinerary the kids will never forget and are sure to improve their racing skills. The team members and Coach Miller will be training at Keystone Resort, Colorado from December 5th through December 10th with Keystones top race Instructors.

The highlight of the training will be a race clinic with Steve and Phil Mahre..(Mahre Brothers), U.S. Ski Team! They will be concentrating on carving techniques and gates. The team members will be going to the peak with an elevation of 11,400 feet after a couple of days acclamation of skiing in the lower elevations.

This is not a vacation for the members that went. Their daily routine will include daily household chores, Rise and shine at 6:30 am, stretch and run at 7:00 am, Breakfast at 7:30 am, 8:00 am until Noon Training. They will pack a lunch and eat on the mountain where training resumes at 2:30pm until 4pm. They will be allowed to Free Ski the entire mountain from 4-6pm. At 6:00pm it's hot tub, relax, supper, homework, homework, homework and tune skis. Lights out will be 9:30pm. Coach promises that after skiing all day, they will be ready for bed! Pictures will be taken of the team members as they train and posted to the site as soon as they arrive back from Colorado.

To make sure that every team member has the chance to attend a race training clinic, Coach Miller has arranged a weekend race camp at Boyne Mountain, Michigan.

On Friday December 13th at 4:00pm, the entire team will be going to another race clinic at Boyne Mountain here in Michigan. The clinic/training will go through Sunday, Dec.15th. Once again with a highly packed training schedule lights out will be at 9PM!

This is the type of winter the teams have been waiting for! Lots of early snow for race preparation! The members are pumped and ready to hit the ski runs...this promises to be a great year for the kids! GO TEAM
