Hopefully the "first race of the season jitters" are gone now after having a "fun" race day against Benzie Ski team at Crystal Mt. On Jan 4th. As this was a pre season race the team members were able to take another run even if they DQ'd, once all racing order had been completed. Normally your race would end right there. For scoring purposes however, the first 2 runs in each event were the ones they used. Being able to redeem ones self with that extra run was nice, with the kids being able to show that they do have what it takes when all goes well.

Coach Miller instructs both Benzie and OHS teams on the rules of to todays race, clears up any questions the racers may have, and wishes them well at today's race.

Boys Giant Slalom was a good example of how first race jitters, too intense about the race, forgetting ones gear at home, and many other things can effect ones performance on the course. As Coach Miller says, " There is only one person that can beat you. YOURSELF!" And how true that statement is, and was true for today! Chad Dilts of Benzie came in first with 19:81 and 19:94 for a combined time of 39:75. Wylie Heller racing for OHS came in a close 2nd place with times of 20:25 and 20:35 for a nice combined time of 40:60. Garry Honeycutt of Frankfort, racing for OHS made a super showing today in GS placing 8th with 27.64 and 26.95 for a combined 54.59. Alex Harris stepped up today also with a nice 2nd run with 34:10 and 22.39 for combined 56.49. Placing 11th was Travis Berklund after a small bit of trouble but pulling off runs of 37:49 and 23.67 for a combined effort of 1.01.16. Tom Meoak secured 12th with a little bit of trouble on his second run with times clocking at 25.10 and 48.86 for a combined of 1:13.96. Looking good at the top of the course, but running into problems several gates down ,Chris Smith came in with a first run of 59:42 and a DQ second run. Five racers later, they announced Chris did not have a DQ and gave him his time of 25:?. Jackson Carter's first run gave a nice 23:33, but alas that second run got him a DNF. Once all racers were finished with GS they were allowed an extra run where Jackson and Chris both redeemed themselves with 21 seconds! Good job boys!

BOYS SLALOM: Put Chad Dilts of Benzie and OHS racer Wylie Heller head to head again, with Chad once again coming in first with a combined time of 44:29 and Wylie second with his runs of 22:34 and 23:59 for a combined effort of 46:93. Chris Smith placed 6th with his times of 24:71 and 25.21 and Travis Berklund did a nice job coming in 7th with times of 25:16 and 25.50. Alex Harris placed 9th with a first run of 27:03 and improving that with 26:37. Tom Meoak raced down for 12th place with his times of 30.44 and 29.93. Jackson Carter missed a gate and had to come to a screeching halt and hike back on his first slalom run which gave him 38:52. Determined to redeem himself, his second run was a nice 24:44. Garry Honeycutt of Frankfort racing for OHS came in 14th with his times of 33:25 and 32:30.

Girls Slalom: While the boy's team worked out their problems over on the GS course, the girls team were running a very nice race in Slalom. Kaylie Mathieu came in second to Benzie's Mariah Call with her times of 25:60 and 26:03 for a combined time of 51.63. Kelli Hopwood finished 6th with a first run of 26:83 and 2nd run of 26:95 for a combined time of 53:78. A Benzie racer placed 5th ahead of Kelli with a very close time of :53:69. Close race there! Placing 7th for OHS was Frankfort's Stephanie Griffin with her times of 27:54 and 27.80 for her combined time of 55:34. It should be noted that this is Stephanie's first year racing. Charlette Kalbach came in 10th with her combined time of 1:00.67 and Dani Olson 11th with 1:01.90. Amanda Redder hung in there and brought in 13th place with times of 37:36 and 36.76 for a combined time of 1:14.12. Erika Jach did not race today.

Top OHS girl racer for the day, Kaylie Mathieu in transition for the next gate.

Girls Giant Slalom: Kaylie Mathieu proved yet again to be the fastest OHS girls racer placing 3rd in GS with her times of 22:80 and 23:45. But let it be said that Kelli Hopwood was right on her tails with her times of 23.02 and 23:33 taking 4th place. Placing 6th was Stephanie Griffen with her times of 24:69 and 24:55. Charlette Kalbach raced down with 26:43 and 25:86 grabbing 10th position and Dani Olson came in 11th with her times of 28:54 and 27.38. Amanda Redder had respectable times of 33:21 and 32:30 that brought her 12th place.

Now that the first race is over and all the bugs worked out, the jitters gone and the teams settle into a race routine we should start seeing what these teams are about and what they are capable of doing. The youth that went to Colorado and /or to the Boyne clinic improved their racing abilities and they are anxious to prove that point! The next race and the first Official race of the season for OHS is scheduled for Jan. 8th at 5pm at Crystal Mountain where all schools in the conference go head to head.
