Give me 50! Grunts and groans could be heard even from kids that had been in a fall sport while trying to achieve 50 pushups! Coach Miller doesn't like to hear " I can't". He prefers," I can" or " I'll try!"

OHS Ski Team Welcomes Back Coach Dale Miller!

The kids are excited about his return to coaching and are expecting great things to happen this year under his excellent training and coaching abilities. The teams can not practice on their skis until mid November, however dryland training is highly encouraged. The teams welcome back youth from Frankfort and Bear Lake schools for the Boy's and Girls teams as well as welcome new comers from those schools! Coach Miller is trying to organize a training camp in Colorado as well as Race Camp at Boyne this year. The first race for the ski team will be Jan. 3rd at Crystal Mt.

Managers Needed

Feel the burn! Squats helped the team find muscles they forgot they had.

Jackson, Alex, Chris, Travis and Kaylie go down into the squat and hold it for as long as they can. More burn.........

Travis and Kaylie demonstrate balancing on one foot then the other. You can hold your foot off to the side, in front of you, behind you. This develops strength and agility.

Chris leads the team in jumping jacks for a count of 50.

The term "dryland training" comes up a lot when talking ski team. Here is an attempt to explain what is done during this training.

Pictured are the Frankfort and Bear Lake members of the team doing the crunches, which strengthen the abdominal muscles.

A friendly game of soccer united the kids as teams as they worked to out score their counter parts. Mr. Mathieu and Mrs. Smith were the goalies...at least until Mrs. Smith proved to not be such a good goalie and let the one team score excessively! Coach Miller then took her spot as goalie and she went on to Referee the game. The score evened up and soon Coach Miller let a ball get by him for a score. When the teams looked back, they noticed that Coach Miller had put the cones right beside his legs now so that no one would get the ball past him again!

Wind Sprints! Coach had one member kick the ball as far out as they could and then the team ran sprints to the ball. The first one there, was the one that got to kick the ball for the next sprint and didn't have to run that time.

What team hasn't run those pesky steps on the Onekama School Hill? Ski team runs up as fast as they can on their toes....and when they get to the top, they must then run backwards down the hill on the grass side. The kids now realize that being in other sports before ski season helps to keep you in shape, but dryland training is still essential to getting your body in shape for ski season. Each sport uses muscles a little bit differently. Dryland training will definitely help you find those muscles! Along with those pictured, weight training and distance running is also incorporated into the training.

Managers Needed

The OHS Ski Team is looking for 7th and 8th graders who would like to be managers for the Boys and Girls Teams. The majority of our managers from last year are now Freshman and are team racers. Managers train right along with the team, do manager duties during practices and races , forerun scheduled races,a nd also compete in races just for their age group and abilities. There are usually 2 medal races that managers can compete in during the season.

You are responsible for buying your own season pass and ski equipment as is the team. You do not need special race skis to be a manager. Helmets will be provided if you do not own one and they are required this year. There are usually one to two races weekly which might include Saturdays occasionally. Practices will be at Crystal Mt. weeknights with transportation available to the teams once there is enough snow and Crystal is open. Managers are not required to attend every practise or race, but the more you attend , the more race training you will receive. Youth choosing this position must be responsible, on good behavior at all times and have passing grades. Interested youth may contact Coach Dale Miller or any Ski Team member.
