Saturday, Jan. 24 at home vs Bear Lake 10:00 On Saturday 1/24/04 the 5th grade boys basketball team took on the Bear Lake Lakers at home and were ahead at the half by a score of 12-8, but in the second half the young Portagers couldn't get the ball to fall through the hoop and lost by a score of 12-15 to even there record at 1-1. Scoring was Ryan & Bryan with 4 points each, Jared & Cameron with 2 points each.
Wednesday, Jan. 28, at Manistee Catholic 5:00 MCC game was cancelled due to the weather.
Saturday, Jan. 31 Home vs Brethren 10:00 Saturday 1/31/04 the Brethren Bobcats came to Onekama to take on the fifth grade Portagers. In a very close game that went into overtime the young Portagers pulled out a one point Victory as Ryan hit a free throw with just a few seconds on the clock to give the Portagers their 2nd Victory of the season. After 1 quarter the Portagers were ahead by a score of 6-0 and at the Half the Portagers were ahead by a score of 10 to 8. After 3 quarters the Portagers were still ahead by a score of 13 to 10 and as the buzzer sounded to end the 4th quarter the score was even at 16 each, but the young Portagers came back after falling behind in overtime to win by a score of 21 to 20. Scoring for the Portagers was Cameron with 6, Bryan & Nolan added 4 each, Ryan 3, and Jared and Jeremy each had 2 points. Photographs
Monday, Feb. 16 Home vs Pentwater 5:00 On Monday 2/16/04 the Penwater Falcons flew up to Onekam to take on our 5th grade boys in a Basketball game. At the end of the first quarter the young Portagers were behind by a score 2-4. At the half the Portagers were behind by a score of 2-10 and just couldn't get going tonight. They lost to the Falcons by a score of 12-21 and saw their record go to 2-2 for the season. Scoring for the Portagers was Nathan with 4 points, Cameron, Jared, Ryan and Nolan all had 2 points each. The young Portagers were again cheered on by the 5th and 6th grade cheerleaders dressed up in their attractive uniforms.
At BEAR LAKE 2/18/04 On Wednesday 2/18/04 the 5th grade basketball team went to Bear Lake to take on the Lakers. In the 1st quarter Cameron made a three pointer at the end of the quarter to give the Portagers a 9-8 lead. But in the second and third quarter the young Portagers couldn't get the ball to fall through the hoop and were behind by a score of 9-18 going into the final quarter the Portagers made a comeback in the final quarter, but it wasn't enough as they lost by a score of 17 - 22. Scoring for the Portagers was Cameron with 7, Todd hit for 6 and Jared and Nolan each added 2 points. Photographs
Saturday, Feb. 21 at Brethren 9:00 The 5th grade beat Wellston in the first game today. In the second game they beat Pentwater to advance to the championship game at Brethren next Saturday at 10:00 a.m. against Walkerville. Good Luck 5th graders in your championship game next Saturday. (Some 5th grade students will write about their games.)Teams in the Tournment are Wellston, Onekama, Kaleva, Walkerville and Pentwater. The boys write about the game.

Onekama Fifth Graders Crowned League Champs

The 5th grade boys basketball team traveled to Brethren Saturday morning to take on their rival, the Bobcats, in the WMD conference Championship game. At the half the young Portagers were ahead by a score of 15-8, and in the second half the Portagers didn't let up and caming away with a 24-14 win! They were crowned League Champs for the tournament. They didn't get there 1st place plaque or trophy but will receive it at a later date Congratulations 5th graders on a job well done and also to your Coaches Mrs. Kay Salyer and Mr. Brent MacArthur and to all the fans and cheerleaders for their support through out the season. ...Mr. Zupin
