Lakers Claim D League Championships October 9th

The Lakers hosted their only home meet of the season Wednesday, which was fittingly for the West Michigan D League championships.

The Bear Lake boys flirted with a perfect score, tallying 18 in their win, while the girls cruised to victory as well with 20 points.

The Laker boys took the top three spots en route to topping MCE (83), Crossroads (89), Walkerville (94), Pentwater (98) and Brethren (143).

Bear Lake’s John Girven paced the field in 17:30 and was followed by teammates Jordan Anderson (second, 17:39), John Schoedel (third, 17:59), Cole Verrett (fifth, 18:29) and Shane Peterson (seventh, 18:38) to round out the team score. Jared Bair (eighth, 18:39) and Alex Barto (10th, 18:58) also ran.

Brethren had a runner apiece in the varsity races Wednesday in Josh Riggs and Aspen Robak.

Riggs set a personal record in 19:36, good for 13th place in the boys race, while Robak finished the girls race in 28:15 for 19th.

“We’re just hoping to set PRs every week,” Brethren coach Andy Robak said. “Josh just blew his PR out of the water. That’s the first time he’s broken 20, so that’s a great event for him.

“Aspen’s all-time best is 28:10, so she was right there too.”
