MANISTEE — Onekama picked up its fourth win in the last five games with a 41-38 West Michigan D League victory against Manistee Catholic Central on Tuesday night.

“They wanted this one pretty bad,” Onekama coach Nathan Bradford said of his players, “and they worked hard to get it in the end.”

Jennica Mathieu had a game-high 15 points to go with eight rebounds for the Portagers (4-6, 3-4 WMD), Hailey Kott and Tawny Kott scored nine apiece and Nicki Slater eight.

Haley Doyle led the Sabers (6-5, 3-4 WMD) with 11 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, Jordan Barnett scored nine while Alysha Heck had eight points, eight rebounds and seven steals.

“We’ve got to get more scoring out of the post,” said MCC coach Todd Erickson. “If we do that, it will open up the outside.”

Onekama jumped out to a 10-4 lead at the end of the first quarter before MCC rallied to pull within two at halftime at 19-17.

“We came out and played strong,” Bradford said. “We shot fairly well to start the game, then cooled off and they came back.”

Onekama shot 41 percent from the floor for the game, compared to just 27 percent for the Sabers.
