PENTWATER — The Onekama boys basketball team couldn’t climb back from its early deficit at the hands of Pentwater Friday night, falling to the Falcons 71-61.
Despite playing nearly even with the West Michigan D League foe for the final three frames, the Portagers’ 19-9 hole at the end of the first quarter proved to be the difference.
“There were times when we’d get it back to within five, seven points but then they’d pull away to 10, 11 again,” said Onekama coach Jim Hunter. “When you’re playing someone, who I think we were pretty evenly matched with, it’s tough to play from behind like that.”
Quinn Matthews led the Portagers (1-5, 1-5 WMD) with 19 points to go with five assists and four steals while teammates Alex Welch scored 10 and Joe Eno and Drew Slevin each scored nine. Kyle Acker led Onekama on the boards with 10.
