MANISTEE — The Onekama volleyball
team still hasn’t had all its players together for a practice yet this
season, but it didn’t show on Wednesday night in a win over Manistee
Catholic Central.
The Sabers made it closer each game, but the Portagers still prevailed
in three, 25-14, 25-17, 25-20.
“They played really well together — great passes, great serving,”
Onekama coach Lanette Keith said of her players. “Everyone was where
they needed to be and they moved for the ball, called, talked, hit hard
— it was a good game.”
Nicole Slater led the Portagers with 14 points, Ashley Hobart had 11
points and seven kills, and Jennica Mathieu had 11 points and served at
100 percent.
“There were so many good things out
of every player,” Keith said. “Ashley Hobart is just pounding the ball
at the net, Nikki Slater is everywhere — getting the ball high enough
for everyone to get, Katie (Prielipp) is digging it out of the back row,
and Jennica is all over it too. I have a lot of good players and they’re
all working good together. It’s been a great season so far.”
The biggest problem for the Sabers was at the service line.
“They have some strong servers and we’re struggling at the service
line,” said MCC coach Maryann Allen. “If you can’t get it over, you
don’t have a shot. We have a lot of talent and we need to hone it in.Mimi Modjeski led the Sabers with
seven aces and five kills, Amanda Bigalke had five aces and two kills
while Laura Martz had three aces, three kills and two assists. Also for
MCC, Holly Gamache had three aces, Jordan Barnett had three kills, Kayla
Bergel had an ace and Alex Barnett had a kill, a block and two assists.

"Tonight was a non-conference
game for the Portager's, which we secured the win in three games.
Scores were 25-14, 25-17 and 25-20. The girls played very well
together, covering and setting up the front row for many kills. Ashley
Hobart led the team with 7 kills, 11 points and was a power hitter
tonight. Niki Slater was the teams top scorer with 14 points, Jennica
Mathieu served at 100% with 11 points, Kailani Buckner and Niki Slater
were strong players all over the court with great serve receive. Katie
Prielipp was the team Libero and turning out some jump serves. Sherece
Revolt led the team in set and was strong on covering the net. I was
very proud tonight to see how well we played together on the court. We
had a lot of coverage on the floor and many great passes."
