Onekama Portagers showed great determination and heart in the inaugural winter tip off vs. Mesick

The Onekama Girls’ Basketball season is finally underway.  Our Onekama Portagers showed great determination and heart in the inaugural winter tip off of the girls’ season.   The come from behind barn burner was a true testimony to the games focus which was to do what we could do and hold nothing back.  It was a great team and school effort.  There was a great crowd on hand with many students, staff, parents, and community members cheering us on.

Unfortunately, our Portagers were defeated by the Mesick Bulldogs by a score of 45-40.  Alyssa Cole lead scoring with 16 points and 7 steals.  Kelsey Acker and Olivia Bolthouse each knocked down 7 points.  Carmen Howard added 4 points and was solid defensively.

Kieran O’Connor lead assists with 6 while she and Chelsea Miller each chipped in 2 points. Chelsea also had 8 rebounds. Paige Rutowski led in rebounds, pulling down 10.

The teams are next in action at home this Friday, November 30th against Manistee High Freshman and Manistee Catholic Central.  Thanks to those who came out to support the inaugural girls’ game during the winter season.  We hope to see you Friday for another great match up.

Good Luck to the 5th and 6th grade teams this Thursday as they play host to Manistee Catholic Central in the final regular season game!

Go Portagers!  ~C. Turk
