On May 21 I went on a field trip to the school ship. My mom chaperoned for Jarrett, Kyle, and me. My favorite thing to do on the ship was chemicals. We got to mix the chemicals to find how much oxygen and PH were in the water. The ship was a schooner so it had two masts. Mrs. Bennett and my bus driver Steve were in our group. I also liked digging in the mud for living things. It was so cold some of us had to ask for an extra coat. Every one got to steer the ship. It was fun! Kyle and I got to put up a sail all by our selves. After putting up the sails my hands were numb. Mrs. Bennett took a lot of pictures on the ship. I had a lot of fun on the trip. ~James S.

On Monday, May 21 the 5th grade went on a field trip on the Inland Seas Schooner. You would know it's a schooner because a schooner has to have two masts. We left school at seven and came back at two-thirty. The first thing we did was go in a building and see all the stuff that lives in the lake. Then the main director Mr. Davis led us to the boat. I would say it was the coldest day of the year. Before we got on the boat the captain Mr. Hale went over the safety rules. He picked me to demonstrate how to put on the life jacket. Captain Hale said we didn't have to wear one though. My groups first instructor was Barb. Weather was the first thing we had to do. After all the testing of the water and the air Mr. Davis showed us a new tool. It was called an otter trawl. It was used to catch fish. They needed four volunteers to help them. He picked Hope, Kelsey, McKenna, and me. I go to throw the net in. Then when we had to pull it in the rope was wet so after a minute our hands were frozen. Mrs. Catanese kept cheering us on. When we got it all pulled in we found out that it was a dud. So the crew did it again and the got I think five round gobies. Out of all the stations my group started with the plankton. We put the plankton under a microscope. There were thousands of them. It was very fascinating. All we had was five minutes so we didn't get the chemical station done, but we found that our water was clean. The most fun station there was in my opinion was steering the ship. We had to repeat everything he said so that if he made a mistake he could fix it. In the benthos station we looked in mud for critters. Chloe and I found at least five worms. The next station was stewardship. Stewardship means taking care of the land and water. The last station was fish. We learned all about all the different fish. After all of it was over we had to group on the ship and take two pictures for their website. When we were all on the bus it was one o'clock so we had to eat on the way home. I thought it was a very fun trip. ~ Katie B.

On Monday, May 21 my class went to Inland Seas. My Grandpa came with me and we were in a all girl group with Hope, Chloe, Katie, Kelsey, and me. I had a fun time! My favorite part was looking at the fish. There are two types of plankton. Phyto plankton and Zoo plankton. It was very interesting to see the ship. The ship was called a schooner and was 42 tons. We got to go down inside of the ship and look at plankton under a microscope which was very cool. Then we went over to the chemical station. We would put water in this measuring tube and then put dye in the water to match the color on the side of the measuring tube. The next station was where we had to spray a tub full of mud down to see if we could find something alive and moving. Hope was the only one who found something. It was a red worm, very interesting looking too. Our group then went over to the fish station which was my favorite .A man that was in charge of the station showed us a Round Goby. I thought it looked cute, but then he said they were invasive which made me change my mind right away. He had a big fish tank of them. In the tank were two crayfish. One of them was invasive, but didn't hurt anything and the other one was a native crayfish. Then the next station was steering the schooner. The captain told us that when he said a command we had to repeat it so if he made a mistake he could fix it. That was pretty cool too. Finally the last station was talking about the Great Lakes and how to help. We talked about the Asian Carp that were trying to make it into the Great Lakes. I had an idea that they should not use an electric fence, but use a barbed wire fence that went all the way to the bottom and about six feet tall out of the water so the carp don't jump right over the fence. I had an awesome time and I want to go again sometime. ~Samantha B.

We went to Suttons Bay and went on a ship. I had fun. We got to steer a boat. The instructors name was Tim Davis. We used chemicals. We used a microscope to see plankton. Zoo plankton are animals, and phido plankton are plants. Phido plankton create 50% of our earths oxygen. We looked around in mud to find sea animals. We found little red worms mostly. Some of the worms were orange. We also found one that looked like it had a shell. It also had little black lines on its back. It looked like a yellow tan. I had a lot of fun at Inland Seas. ~Guage W.

On Tuesday May 22nd Mrs. Brown 5th grade class had a field trip to Suttons Bay to ride the Inlands Seas schooner. When we boarded they taught us the safety rules of the ship and one of them was to make sure nobody falls off. My group was the Hogs and we were Ben. J, Carson, Mr. Johnson, my dad, and me. We learned about Phytoplankton and Zoplankton, also how to steer the ship, and talked about fish like gobies that we caught with the Otter Trawl. We got to raise the sails. We took water samples with a gadget called a Van Dorm. Later we had to raise the anchor and we got very wet. Then we started going to the first station out of the six stations. We started at the stern with the captain getting to steer the boat. We ate on the bus on the way back. I had a great time a the Inland Seas schooner ship. ~Trent E.

On Tuesday May 22 the fifth grade went to Suttons Bay. We went to the Inland Seas School Ship. The type of ship was a Schooner. It was a tall ship. One thing we did was drop a net to catch some fish. I learned that the net was called a Otter Trawl. We let the net drift behind us for ten minutes. When we pulled it up there was quite a bit of fish in it. We learned that a few years ago only two percent of the fish they caught were gobies. Now 92 percent of the fish we caught were gobies. Goby are an invasive species that take over fast but they only get about 6 inches long. Then we through a net out for plankton. That net was called a Plankton Net. we caught only Zoolankton because Phytoplankton are two small and went through the holes in the net. Pytoplankton are so small the holes in the net were 153 um witch is about two human hairs put together wide and they went right through. Then we put this thing down to see how far we could see down. The thing we put down was called the Secchi disk. A few years ago you could only see six meters down witch is good but we could see down 16 meters witch is 50 feet. The reason we could see more is because the invasive Zebra Muscle is eating too much vegetation. I learned a lot. It was a lot of fun. ~Brendan C.

On May 22, 2012 half of Mrs. Brown's fifth grade class went to Suttons Bay. We went to Suttons Bay to go on the Inland Seas Tall Ship. The type of ship we went on was a Schooner. We put this net that has two boards on each end of the net to open the net up. The net was called an Otter Trawl. It was designed to catch fish. They had a permit so it was legal to fish with a net. We only caught small fish. They had another net which was called a plankton net. The holes were so tiny that only 2 hairs from a human can squeeze through the holes. We caught Cycopoid Copepod plankton. The Secchi Disk is about a five inch long and you drop it in the water and you keep it going down until you can't see it any more. It tells you how much plankton is in the water. It went down 16 meters. It was a little cold but not that bad. I had a very fun time. ~Ben A.

On May 22, 2012 the fifth grade class went to Suttons Bay on a field trip to the Inland seas tall ship. When we got there we got in our groups and boarded our ship. We set off and started our stations. First we got to see how they caught fish with their net called an Otter trawl. It was really cool. Then they had to get the fish out of the net and we got to watch them take them out. We also got to get water samples by a Van Dorn. You had to put the Van Dorn in the water and drop it down near the bottom. Then you had to drop a thing down the line and it closed the hatch. When you brought it up it was full of water. The funnest thing of all was being able to look at the plankton under a microscope. We did many fun things during that day but we had to go in eventually, so we got on the bus and started our long journey home. That was our field trip to Suttons Bay. ~Blake S.

We got to go to the inland seas school ship. It was in Suttins Bay. The group that I was in had three people in it. The best part about the inland seas ship was that we got to do chemistry. The second thing that we got to do was that we got to take water samples. the best thing that we got to do was have warm weather with barley any clouds. I had a lot of fun. ~Sara M.
