Fifth Grade
Inland Seas
Field Trip:
 Page 2
On May 21, I went on Inland Seas field trip. It was a good one. I learned a lot about sailing and the lakes. My favorite was the lab. A ship needs two masts to be a schooner. We netted fish, plankton, and we also switched around to stations. I learned how to drive a ship. Then we raised the sails. After we docked and left. It was a good time learning about the lakes. ~D'Angelo W.

On May 22nd Mrs. Brown took us to Suttons Bay. The boat we took was a small schooner it had a for sail and mainsail. The otter trawl catches fish and it's about 25 ft. long. My group was called the hogs as in the Harley Davidson's motorcycles. The hogs were me, Trent, and Ben J. They catch plankton with a plankton net at 50 ft deep. I found out that they barely ever get good weather. ~Carson H.

On May, 21 Monday Mrs. Bennett and Mrs. Brown's class went to the Inland Ship Schooner. Half of our class went the 21st and the other half went 22nd. I went the 21st with my friends Katie, Chloe, Hope, Maggie, McKenna and Olivia. We had to get up early. I got up at 6 o'clock. Maggie, Olivia, McKenna were in my group. Our group name was Anchors Away. It took us an hour and a half to get to Suttons Bay. When we got to the visitors center it was really cool I saw a bike that the people found in the lake and it was covered with zebra mussels. That was my favorite part of the visitors center. Then we went to the boat! We had to enter one by one. Tim the instructor said that he was going to blow a horn it was not as loud as I expected. When we where on the boat Katie, Hope, Mckenna and I volunteered to put an otter troll in the lake. An otter trall is a big net that catch fish. I was very cold I froze. The part I liked the best was the plankton station. It was fun to see all the little plankton hopping around. I also liked the part where we got to drive the boat. We had to say the repeat commands so we didn't turn the wrong way. Then we went back to the dock and we saw baby geese. Then we ate lunch on the bus because we didn't have any time to stop. ~Kelsey K.

On May 21, my class went on a cool field trip. We got to ride on a Schooner! We even got to steer it! We all became scientists for the day. We got to look at plankton under a microscope. I thought I was going to sink the ship when I steered it. It is a really old boat and it worked really great, well that's pretty obvious because it got us back safely. It was a really fun trip! My favorite part was when I steered the boat. The steering wheel is big and black. The plankton looked cool under the microscope. We got to dig into mud and look for living creatures. The ship has two masts. We also got to do chemistry, we got to learn about water sheds, and look at fish we caught. The crew put a line of doom on deck so we know not to cross it. They also said that the bus ride here is probably more dangerous than sailing on the ship itself. It was a fun trip! ~Jarrett B.

On May 22 fifth grade went to Inland lakes tall ship. On this field trip the class learned stuff. The ship was at Suttons bay. On the ship we learned what invasive species were in the Bay and how they got in. Our class also learned what ship it a Schooner. Our class also saw how clear the water is we use a device call a Secchi disk. We caught Plankton with a Plankton Net. We caught fish with a net using a Device called Otter Trawl. We learned that they had a special permit to catch fish with a net. So it wasn't illegal. We also took a water sample with a device called Van Dorn. To see what the PH level was. Also the Dissolved Oxygen level. Our class had a great Field Trip.  ~Rylan C.

On May 22nd we went to Suttons Bay. Their were five groups my group was Asian Zombies. Aric, Blake, and Me were in Asian Zombies. I learned that a Otter Trawl is a fishing net. The kind of boat we were on was a Schooner boat. I learned that a Secchi Disk is something used to see how far you can see down. A Seechi Disk Is Black and White. It was something I want to do again! ~Jared N.

On Tuesday the 5th grade went to Suttens Bay for our field trip. It took about one and a half hours to get there. When we finally got there we were given instructions. We were put in groups, my group was Morley, Ashlee and her mom, my grandma and I, and Mrs. Brown. Our group name was Sea Jack. Our instructor's name was Ale, he was very nice. Our instructor said that the zebra muscles eats the plankton and it filters the water to make it clear and not dirty. We had booklets to fill out at each station. At the weather station we learned about Visibility and our instructor said it was 15 miles and there were no clouds. At the fish station there was a collection device and it was called Otter Trawl, it collected fish and we tried to see what type of fish they were. All the groups got to put up the main Mast and the Mainsail. It was hard when it was all most all the way up. When we were done on our Field trip we got our pictures taken. We went to the gift shop and people bought a few things. When we were done we were on the way to back to school. We ate our lunch on the bus, after lunch my grandma and I fell asleep.  ~Haley G.

On Tuesday the 5th grade class went to the Inland Seas. It was warm outside so it was nice. The people in my group were Sara, Sylvia, and I. We got to control the main wheel. The man called me Dee-Ann. We got to go catch fish. In the mud I found a zebra muscle. Sara was the person holding the hose and Sylvia found a lot of red worms. We also looked in the plants. We went to the plankton station and we saw a lot of plankton. We learned that when you take two of my hair then It will fit in the hole in the plankton net. We learned there is a lot of plankton. The water station is when we got water and we mix things together to find out how much oxygen was in the water. We tried to get the blue water clear. We figured out how it is bad to litter because it goes in the water. It was fun to go to the Inland seas ~DeeAnn G.
