The first time I went to Inland Seas
was on May 21, 2012. First the captain gave us instructions and then
gave us an instructor and some name tags. We made our group name. It was
K J 2 squared. My group was the last one on the boat. We first looked
and talked about an otter trawl and how it could catch small fish. The
captain picked four people to put it in the water. We always waited for
ten minutes before we lifted the otter trawl. While they put the otter
trawl back in, we got to learn about the weather and clouds. My group
and I pulled a rope to make the sail go up. Then all the groups switched
to learn more stuff. First, we searched the boat. We always had to
repeat the captain's command. It was time to switch so we went to the
middle of the boat to learn about the watershed, and how we can pollute
the waters and how to stop the pollution. It was time to switch again.
This time, we saw the little critters in the lake and saw them move a
lot, and all the red stuff was pollution on their body. Next, we went to
the chemical station. That was my favorite one. We dropped dye in a
glass of water. It was blue, and then it got lighter. It was dark blue,
and then it looked just like water. It was time to switch again. This
time we looked at mud and grass for bugs and checked them off. Then it
was the last switch. It was about fish, and then it was time to go. It
was the first time I ever rode in a big boat. I'll never forget the
Inland Seas trip. ~Kyle C.
On Tuesday, the fifth grade went to
Sutton's Bay. It took us an hour and a half to get there. We were told
how to go down the latter and other safety stuff. We learned about fish,
plankton, sails, and how to turn the wheel. We sailed on a schooner. I
saw a 3-spine stickleback, rock bass, and a round goby. I wanted to see
a Johnny darter, but we didn't catch one. We learned the sail's names.
We also got to raise a sail. I saw a bunch of plankton under a
microscope. Some were invasive. One was huge with very big antennas. On
the way back I saw two swans and 5 cynics following the smaller one.
Then we went to the gift shop. I bought a turtle and when you wind it up
it will swim around. Then we left. We didn't have time to eat there, so
we ate on the way back. I had a great time at Inland Seas. ~Sylvia M. |
