Testing the Porosity and Permeability of sand and gravel

Porosity Test: Logan, Nathan, and Jeremy are adding water to the tube. In the tube is gravel. The end of the tube is covered with plastic. They want to see whether gravel or sand will hold more water.

Permeability: In a second set of tests, students poured water through the tube again. This time the end of the tube was covered with a nylon mesh. They were to find out which allowed water to flow through more quickly: sand or gravel.

Science experiment
Ashley

This experiment was really fun, working together. I like doing experiments with lots of people, because you can get done faster. It was a mini aquifer we used. Experiments are really fun cause you use different ingredients in the aquifer. The aquifer even stores water.

Safe water is important to me, because we need clean water to be healthy. We need clean water to survive. Us science seekers are trying to clean dirty water. We are trying to save the world. Saving water is a good duty.

Groundwater Pollution
Chris

In the lab activity today we put food coloring in our model of a well. The food coloring was an example of pollution. We had to keep raining on our model. We took the pollution out of our model. It took a lot of time to get the pollution out. When we did this I was really excited.

Safe water is important to me because when it is fresh it is safe. If safe water is safe it won't hurt anyone. In our project the water wasn't good and fresh so people got sick. When people get sick they don't feel good so the more they drank the water the sicker they got. When water is safe it is good.

Polluted Plume
Taylor

Polluted Plume was the name of the experiment we did in class on Monday and Tuesday. We used our ground water table models and we put green dye in the models. Then we let the dye soak through little. After that we created a vacuum with a straw and sucked some water out of the well. Then we did it over and over.

Polluting is not good for the environment because if people drink polluted water they can get very sick or they can die. Even if an animal drinks the water they can get sick or even die too. You should not pollute because a person you know could get very sick and die. That is what we did and learned when we did our experiment.

Pollution Plume
Logan

Yesterday we did an experiment on pollution in ground water. We used our water table model and green dye as pollution. We used straws as vacuums to pump our well.

It took twenty minutes before we had pollution in our well. Every five minutes we would pump our well and make rain. We made rain with the pipettes. Safe water is very important for you health.
