Learning in Basketball
by Autumn

I like basketball. At the first pradice we learned a lot about basketball. We learned how to do lay-ups and how to make points by shooting hoops. We had to run a lot . It is hard, but I think it is fun. The first game was September 20th. We played Trinity Lutheran. I was nervous about the game but we won 24 to 2. That was a good game because we won.

My favorite Sport is basketball. I play basketball. The first game I had was really cool because we went against Trinity Lutheran and the scores were 24 to2 so we won. The first practice I had was weird because I had eleven basketball players on the team. We went against Bear Lake next and we lost because there was 6th graders and 5th graders. I got number 23 for my jersey number. We got the new jerseys and the 6th graders got the old jerseys. The people that are on the basketball team are Marlee, Steph, Autumn, Ronnie, Katharine, Amber, and I. It was a lot of fun.

COACHES COMMENTS
By Mr. and Mrs. Carlson

Hello everyone. We both wanted to give all of you some more specific information about the 5th Grade Girls Basketball Team.

Amber is a good ball handler and guards people well. She is always looking for an opening to make something happen.

Autumn seems to do her best work close to the basket with rebounds and second shots. She holds onto the ball in the roughest times.

Christen has a lot going for her and is constantly improving. She plays well anywhere on the floor but we are trying to lead her into defense.

Danielle is a natural and at home anytime she can get the ball. She shows endless determination and skill.

Katie has a bright future in basketball. Unfortunately she will be moving away soon after season. We wish you the best of luck. You will be missed by us all.

Kelly has improved over the summer. She handles the ball well and is great at shooting free throws.

Marlee is probably the most focused and intense person on the team. She seems to "will" the ball down the court. She is also our "warm up" helper.

Meghan is a dynamic player who is always working hard. She covers offense and defense with ease and always is trying to get a hand on the ball.

Ronnie: They say dynamite comes in small packages and Ronnie is the proof. She is very energetic and can take a hit and keep going. She is also a great shot.

Steph is splendid on both ends of the court. She is a real "Heads Up" player who can make things happen and is a natural leader.

It is a real pleasure to watch all of you perfect your games. The coaching seems like so tiny a part when you have so many talented girls too work with. Each of you are very special and as long as you want to play in school sports and are willing to practice, nothing can hold you back.

All our girls have learned that basketball is not always easy to play and practice isn't always fun. But with their determination, good judgment and team work, they will be able to get the ball, make baskets and win games.

Note: Our new team member is Kathy V.

The girls thought it would be a good idea to become friendly with the ref before the game.

On September 20th 1999 we had our first game. I was so excited. I wondered if we were going to lose but it turned out that we were playing 3rd and 4th graders. They are pretty good. When Autumn tried to make a basket when there was two minutes left, the ball hit the back board. It bounced back at me and hit me in the nose. I went out crying. When the game only had one minute and forty seconds left I came back in.
