ONEKAMA'S FIFTH GRADE BAND

We had a great opportunity December 16: our fifth grade band played with the Interlochen Arts Academy Band without even leaving the school building. Through the use of interactive technology the fifth graders could see and speak with the Interlochen class and John Stanley Ross, their instructor.

We got last minute instructions from Miss Schwarz

Talking with Interlochen was fun. It was a great experience. I am glad they gave us a chance to do this. ..Todd

I was scared at first, but after a while I got used to it. They are a good band. I can not wait to be in 11 or 12 grade and be very very good at band. That is what I think about Interlochen. ...T.J.

During "question & answer" time, Tim explained about the dents in his coronet. (caused by his cousin) The young musician at Interlochen gave Tim advice.

I really liked the transmission. I asked a question about the dents in my instrument and he said to get them take out if I can. I finally figured out which way the valves go in too. ...Tim

Travis also received advice. The young lady suggested he get a "plastic thing" to keep his instrument together.

This program will continue once each month. It is financed through a grant from the Michigan Council for the Arts.

Here is what the Interlochen Band looked like on the screen:

I thought it was fun. They were very good players. I wish we were as good as they are. I thought I was going to be nervous, but I was not. I hope we can do this again. ...Jake

All that we played was Hot Cross Buns. They told us stuff I did not know. I hope that next time we play more.

I found out that it was very fun and I think we played great. They played great too. I had a lot of fun. ...Evan

Kayla told us about her summers at Interlochen camp. She wore her camp uniform and showed a film. Kayla's dad ran the machinery.

Today we were the audience. Next time we will get to perform.

I thought it was a good experience for us to listen to Interlochen play. It was cool. They answered our questions very well. I am glad that they knew what to expect because we were only in fifth grade. I really liked it and hope we can do it again sometime. ...Stephanie
