Lakers finish 2nd, Portagers fall in QF

PENTWATER — The Bear Lake volleyball team fell just short in the championship match of an eight-team tournament at Pentwater on Saturday.

The Lakers cruised through both pool play and bracket play, dropping just a pair of sets in its first 11 of the day, before falling to champion Muskegon Catholic Central, 25-14, 25-12.

“It was a long day of volleyball, but they played really well,” Lakers coach Amy Falk said. “We fell short to a real good team, but I was happy with how the day went.”

The Lakers topped Hart (23-13, 25-15) and county rival Onekama (25-9, 25-20), and split with Frankfort (22-25, 25-18) in pool play, which determined seeding for the bracket portion of the invitational.

With a No. 1 seed in the tournament, Bear Lake beat host Pentwater (25-18, 25-16) in a quarterfinal, and Cadillac Heritage Christian (25-16, 15-25, 15-12) in a semifinal.

Hannah Harrington led the Lakers on the day with 56 points from the line of service, including eight aces, with 20 kills. Bear Lake’s Emileigh Ferguson had 23 points, nine aces, 61 kills, and eight blocks; Briann Bowling had 19 points, 21 kills, and three aces; Jillian Johnson had 23 points and three aces; and Breanna Fink had a team-high 59 assists.

Onekama fell short in each of its matches Saturday, but coach Sherri Slater said she was glad to get in a full slate of volleyball.

“I want to get tournaments like this into our schedule,” she said. “It’s very beneficial to get these matches in, and play teams we don’t usually see. It’s a valuable experience for them.”

Before falling to the Lakers in pool play, Onekama fell short of Frankfort (19-25, 12-25) and Hart (10-25, 24-25). In the bracket portion of the invitational, the Portagers were eliminated by eventual champion Muskegon Catholic Central (8-25, 12-25) in a quarterfinal.

Alexis Tribfelner led Onekama at the service line with 23 points and five aces. The Portagers’ Emily Bergren had 19 points and six kills; Anna Brown had 13 points and 12 assists; Hailey Kott had nine kills; and Kelly Koon had six kills.
