Onekama falls to Northport, Grand Traverse Academy

NORTHPORT — The Onekama volleyball team dropped a trio of season-opening matches Saturday at a tri-meet in Northport.

The Portagers opened the day with a 21-6, 21-14 loss to meet host Northport before falling to Grand Traverse Academy 21-11, 11-21, 15-6 and to Northport again 19-21, 21-10, 16-14.

Despite the losses, first-year Onekama coach Sherri Slater was pleased with her team’s improvement throughout the event.

“It started out really rough at the beginning of the day,” Slater said of the two-game loss to the Wildcats. “You could tell it was our first match of the season.

“By the end of the day, though, things were coming around — going a lot better,” she added. “There was a big difference from the first and the third match that we played. I think that was a big bright spot in the day.

“That first match went by in a blink, and it was done. But at the end of the day, we saw a lot of progression in a very short amount of time.”
