ONEKAMA — The Onekama softball team wrapped up its regular season with a pair of West Michigan D League losses to Mason County Eastern on Friday.

Despite a 7-1 loss in the opener and 6-3 setback in the second game, Onekama coach Rob Johnson was pleased with his team’s performance against the league champions and Division 4 No. 8 team in the state.

“Today was a great day for softball all the way around,” he said. “I’m happy with what the girls accomplished.”

Emily Bergren started both games for the Portagers (11-15, 5-9 WMD). She allowed eight hits and struck out two in the opener and gave up seven hits in the second game. Kaylor DeWitt closed out the second game.

Nicki Slater went 2-for-3 in the first game while Jennica Mathieu, Kaitlin Kubiskey and Kathleen Brauer each had a hit.

Jennica Mathieu hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning of the second game to pull the Portagers within three runs in the sixth inning, but they couldn’t get any more.

Nicki Slater, Emily Bergren and Elizabeth Bergren each had a hit.

Onekama will travel to Bear Lake for a Division 4 district quarterfinal game on Tuesday.
