Derek Hobart continued his strong start to the season by firing a 39 to lead the Portagers. He did that despite tripling the final hole of the day. “I should have shot way better,” said Hobart, who birdied No. 6. “(But) I was happy with it, especially with the weather.” Onekama was playing shorthanded and had just four players in the lineup. Alex Welch shot a 43 while first-year players Alexis Tribfelner (59) and Randy Fraley (81) rounded out the team score. “Not too bad at all,” said Onekama coach Mary Jo Zadow. “It’s pretty impressive considering the conditions.”

Tri-Meet (home)
ONEKAMA — The Onekama golf team finished last in a tri-meet on Friday at The Heathlands. Frankfort won the match with a score of 186, followed by Traverse City Homeschool (198) and Onekama (206). Alex Welch led the Portagers with a 42, Derek Hobart shot at 48, Alexis Tribfelner a personal-best 56 and Elizabeth Bergren a 60.  “It’s tough when you only have four shooters,” said Onekama coach Mary Jo Zadow, adding that she was really pleased with Tribfelner’s play. “You just don’t have the scores to toss out.”

Derek Hobart shot a 43 to lead the Portagers, but wasn’t happy with it. “Just playing bad overall,” he said. “My swing tempo felt weird and I couldn’t hit the ball where I wanted to.”

Alex Welch shot a 47, Alexis Tribfelner a 60 and Randy Fraley a 69 to complete Onekama’s team score.

“Neither Alex nor Derek were especially happy with their score tonight,” said Onekama coach Mary Jo Zadow, whose team will play in its third West Michigan D League jamboree today. “Hopefully we can get back on track.”

There are some changes to the WMD Conference line up this year. Baldwin and Crossroads do not have teams this year, so the conference now consists of, Onekama, MCC, Brethren/Bear Lake, Custer, Walkerville and Pentwater. When playing Conference Jamborees, all teams will be present, however it will be dual matches only.

Home matches will be held at The Heathlands. Contact Coach Zadow for updates. mzadow@manistee.org
