Portagers win two

WALKERVILLE — The Onekama softball team swept a West Michigan D League series with Walkerville on Thursday in impressive fashion, as the Portagers won 18-5 in a five-inning opener and 18-2 in a three-frame nightcap.

“Their pitcher had some good speed, but we were hitting the ball,” said Onekama coach Rob Johnson. “Hopefully we can use that offensive momentum against (Mason County Eastern today.”

Onekama pitcher Emily Bergren won the opener, allowing five runs on five hits with nine strikeouts.

At the plate, the Portagers (11-13, 5-5 WMD) had 14 hits as Nicki Slater led the charge, batting 4-for-4 including two doubles with two RBIs. Fellow senior Jennica Mathieu went 3-for-5, all of which were doubles, with four RBIs.

In the nightcap, Kaitlin Kubiskey notched the win in the circle, allowing two runs on three hits with three strikeouts.

At the plate, Slater capped her 7-for-7 series by batting 3-for-3 including a double and a triple. Mathieu knocked a double and a triple with two RBIs while Mikayla Johnson knocked an RBI single.
