BRETHREN — Scoring the first 15 points of the game Friday night paced Brethren to a 61-52 West Michigan D League win over county rival Onekama.

Though the Portagers kept the score close, the Bobcats never trailed in the teams’ league-opener after taking a 15-0 advantage.

“We came out guns going,” Brethren coach Julie Riggs said. “It was never just a walk-away, but they played four good quarters for me and that’s taken a year to do.”

Elana Hickok scored 14 points to lead Brethren (2-1, 1-0 WMD), while Lexi Lakso had 13 points with five assists and three steals, and Sarah Colbrook had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

After starting slow, Onekama (0-2, 0-1 WMD) managed to make it a 20-13 game at the end of the first quarter and a 33-26 contest at the break. But the Portagers never got over the hump.

“We got in a big hole,” Portagers coach Nathan Bradford said. “We tried fighting back but every time we got close, it seemed like the ball just didn’t bounce our way. It just wasn’t our night.”

The Portagers’ Jennica Mathieu scored 18 points with seven rebounds on the night while teammate Hailey Kott scored 18 with four assists and four steals.
