CUSTER — Another slow start led to a third straight loss to open the season for Onekama with a 49-40 West Michigan D League defeat at Mason County Eastern on Wednesday night.

The Portagers (0-3, 0-2 WMD) were held scoreless in the first quarter, made just one field goal in the first half and only six for the game.

“I can’t remember the last time we didn’t score a basket in the first quarter,” said Onekama coach Nathan Bradford.

Tawny Kott led the Portagers with 11 points, Jennica Mathieu scored 10 to go with nine rebounds and Hailey Kott had seven points and seven rebounds.

Despite trailing 24-8 at halftime, the Portagers rallied and whittled the deficit down to single digits before falling short.

“We never quit,” Bradford said. “The girls kept their heads and played the whole game.”
