ONEKAMA — Onekama notched its first win of the season Thursday night in convincing fashion as it ran away with a 55-18 West Michigan D League win over Walkerville.

The Portagers’ Quinn Matthews led the way with 17 points, six assists and five steals while Kyle Acker had a double-double with 11 points and 13 boards.

Both teams were looking for a season-first win, but Onekama (1-3, 1-3 WMD) pounced on the Wildcats (0-5, 0-4 WMD) with a 19-1 first-quarter advantage en route to a 34-3 lead at the break.

“It was just one of those nights for (Walkerville), where they just couldn’t buy a basket,” Onekama coach Jim Hunter said. “We’ve had those nights too, but I give my guys credit. They kept the pedal to the metal and played hard.”

Onekama’s Alex Welch and Drew Slevin each scored six while Joe Eno had five points and 12 rebounds and Derek Hobart scored five with two blocks.

“Obviously, winning gives you confidence,” Hunter said of snapping the season-opening skid. “We saw some good things tonight. We can build on that.”
