BRETHREN — Brethren played host
to Onekama and Grand Traverse Academy Monday for a volleyball tri-meet
in which the Bobcats dropped a match to both guests. Grand Traverse
walked away unscathed as they beat the Portagers as well.
To open the meet, Onekama won its last West Michigan D League match of
the season in three games against Brethren, 25-13, 25-13, 25-11.
The Portagers pulled away from an early 3-3 tie in the first game and
didn’t look back.
Onekama’s Jennica Mathieu and
Nichole Slater each served three straight points.
The Portagers never trailed in both the second and third game.
“I just saw a lot of working together,” Onekama coach Lanette Keith
said. “Good serves, and working together. It was a great win for our
team.”
During the match for Onekama, Slater led with 17 points, 19 digs, 13
spikes, one kill, five assists and two tips, Ashley Hobart added 15
points, seven digs, eight spikes, and four kills, Mathieu had 10 points,
four aces, 18 digs, 11 spikes, two kills, three tips and one assist,
Kailani Buckner had two points, one ace, 12 digs, six spikes, five
kills, 32 sets, one tip and six assists, Katie Prielipp had two points
with one ace, and 20 digs, Diamond Kimpel had one point with three digs,
eight spikes, three kills, five tips and one assist, and Sherece Revolt
had 10 digs, 14 sets, three tips and three assists.
In its second match, Onekama didn’t end with the same result, losing to
the Mustangs in two games during the best of three match, 25-27, 25-18.
“There was a lot of volleying back and forth, so that was really good,”
Keith said. “Lots of hard hits lot of digging in the back too, but they
are a really good team. This was the first time we’ve seen them all
season.”
Grand Traverse held the lead the entirety of the two games, led by
senior Elise Campbell who served up total of 12 points.
For Onekama, Slater had five points with 19 digs, four spikes and one
tip, Revolt had four points, six digs, three sets and five tips, Hobart
had four points, three digs and six spikes, Buckner had two points,
eight digs, one spike, 13 sets and two assists, Katie Prielipp had one
point and eight digs, Mathieu had one point, 12 digs, two spikes, three
assists, one block and six tips and Kimpel had four digs, three spikes
and one tip. |
In the third match of the night,
Brethren went the distance with the Mustangs but were unable to hold on
in the end, losing to Grand Traverse in three games, 23-25, 25-20,
15-11.
“It was a close game,” Bobcats’ coach Melissa Kasarskis said. “We played
this way with them in Traverse. It was point for point. “I’m proud of
the girls. They came back tonight against a team that literally scared
the crap out of us when we were watching them play Onekama.”
The Bobcats didn’t let their
fears get the best of them as they won the first game. Brethren junior
Karen Lewis put together a string of five points behind the service line
giving the Bobcats’ a 13-7 advantage.
“My ace player tonight was Karen Lewis,” Kasarskis said. “She was an all
around good player tonight. All in all, she really stood out for me
today.”
The Bobcats held the lead until the Mustangs were able to tie it up at
23 apiece, but Brethren prevailed.
Despite a late comeback effort after being down 23-14, the Bobcats were
unable to hold a lead in the second game, and in the deciding third
game, watched an 8-4 advantage slip away to an eventual loss. |
