Portagers fall to Cougars

ONEKAMA — Big Rapids Crossroads Charter Academy ran away from Onekama Thursday night with a 74-45 West Michigan D League win.

“We didn’t play that bad,” Portagers coach Roger Smith said. “They were just too quick and tough for us.”

Onekama (3-8, 3-7 WMD) played the Cougars tight in the first quarter, as the Portagers trailed by only one heading into the second at 13-12. But, CCA (10-3, 8-2 WMD) held Onekama to just six points before halftime while putting up 17 of their own.
The Cougars were able to hit 11 3-pointers throughout.

“We couldn’t stop the threes,” Smith said. “They’re a good ball club.”

Also for the Portagers, Ryan Pienta scored six points, while Jake Matthews and Austin Barnett each scored four.

The Onekama junior varsity team topped the Cougars, 57-33. Quinn Matthews led the Portagers with 17 points.
