A ‘hiccup’ for Manistee wrestlers SHELBY
— From Manistee News Advocate Staff Reports - After taking second
place in a 12-team tournament at Frankfort on Saturday, Manistee High
School wrestling coach Chris Codden was expecting his team to follow
that up with another strong outing.
Well, maybe next time.
The Chippewas lost both ends of a quad on Wednesday night at Shelby.
“Not very good,” Codden said. “We came out really flat.” Manistee
lost to Holton, 66-18, and fell to Mason County Central, 54-29. Shelby
was the fourth team at the quad.
Part of the co-op Chippewas’ problem stemmed from missing wrestlers,
as they were without four regular starters and had to plug in junior
varsity members.
“We were missing four weight classes, which is almost always 24
points,” Codden said. |
Manistee had different wrestlers at 145, 152, 171 and 215 pounds.
However, Codden said he was pleased with the effort he got from those
who filled in those spots. “I’ve got people who have won wrestle-offs
against other people for those spots,” he said. “The kids that came off
the bench did a great job.”
The top finishers for Manistee were Caleb Bailey and Travis Bulerski.
Bailey, who split time at 119 and 125, and Bulerski (160) both went 2-0.
Cora Guina (119) won her only match of the night, while Alex Meyers
(103), Nick Carter (125/130) and Raul Torres (heavyweight) all went 1-1.
Brian Fisk (112), Travis McKenney (112), Dakota Girard (135), Alex
Waterman (215) and Jordan Cross (215) all went 0-1, while Tucker Bruce
(130/135), Cody Edwards (140), Jon Hogiev (145), Jesse Kelley (152), Dan
Wehrmeister (171) and Nathan Rybicki (189) all finished 0-2.
“I wasn’t happy with the outcome, but I’m proud of the kids for
fighting through it,” Codden said. “Tonight isn’t a setback, it’s more
of a hiccup.” |
