Manistee Wrestlers Split

Co-op Chips top Trojans,
fall to Huskies

MANISTEE — The Manistee High School wrestling team split a pair of matches against Mid-Michigan Wrestling Conference foes Traverse City Central and Benzie on Wednesday night.

Similarly, Manistee coach Chris Codden was split on how to feel about his team’s performance.

“I was a little disappointed with the outcome against Benzie,” he said. “We came out and gave it our best shot, did the best we could. We have a full squad and we fought as hard as we could.

“I was proud of the kids, disappointed in the outcome, but happy with the fact that I got 100 percent out of everybody.”

Manistee opened the night with a 54-25 win over the shorthanded Trojans, who forfeited nine weight classes, then lost to the Huskies, 54-27.

Bailey, who picked up his 100th career win earlier in the season, improved his team-best record to 27-3 with a pair of wins on Wednesday night at 119 pounds. It only took Bailey 24 seconds to pin Benzie’s Robert Kerby.

“I’m really proud of Caleb,” Codden said. “A lot of kids look up to Caleb and are looking for guidance from him. Caleb is definitely taking it to the next level.”

Nick Carter (125), Tyler Kniss (152), Travis Bulerski (160) all went 2-0, also. Travis McKenney (112) and Raul Torres (heavyweight) both finished 1-0, while Alex Meyers (103), Tucker Bruce (130), Tyler Fogarty (140), Luke Fogarty (145) and Nathan Rybicki (189) all finished 1-1.

Codden said he thought some of his wrestlers — both JV and varsity — looked a bit winded.

“I was disappointed that some of our JV (wrestlers) looked like they were out of shape, which kind of gave momentum to their varsity, which I didn’t like that,” Codden said. “Some of our varsity (wrestlers) were a little winded.

“It’s not that we have to reinvent the wheel by getting back into shape, it just means we have to spend a little more time on possibly getting into more running. It kind of shows me that we’ve maybe laxed off a little bit. We’re going to up the pace.”

It was only the second home match for the co-op Chippewas, and their first since a season-opening quad on Dec. 3.

“It’s a good break from lots of travel,” said senior co-captain Caleb Bailey. “It’s nice to have a home crowd.”

“The guys that did win were very aggressive, very in shape,” Codden said.

Also for Manistee, Brian Fisk (112) and Zach Paine (heavyweight) went 0-1, while Dakota Girard (135), Tyler Knudsen (171) and Cody Polcik (215) all finished 0-2.

“I give a lot of credit to Tyler Knudsen,” Codden said of plugging the younger wrestler into the varsity lineup. “I kind of threw him in the mix and Tyler took every one of them to the third period. I was not unhappy with Tyler at all.”

The Chippewa JV wrestlers will head to Benzie on Friday, while the varsity team will be off until a Jan. 28 match at Pine River. Manistee has one more home match left this season — against Muskegon Catholic Central on Feb. 4.
