KINGSLEY — For a coach who thought his team had lost all three of its matches, Manistee wrestling coach Chris Codden was upbeat about the Chippewas’ performance in a team tournament on Saturday.

So, when he went back and recalculated the scores on Sunday and realized his team actually beat Munising, it only made his weekend better. “I thought we had won,” said Codden, recalling his skepticism about the way the match was scored. “I’m even happier now.”

Codden said what was originally scored as a 42-37 win for Munising, was actually a 43-42 victory for Manistee. He cited six wins by pin (worth six points each), a win by Travis Bulerski that was worth four points and a Caleb Bailey victory that was worth three points.

“You can’t lose when you have eight wins,” he said. “I thought they had the wrong score.”

Saturday’s tournament was supposed to have seven teams, but three were unable to make it because of the severe weather, leaving just Manistee, Kingsley, Gladwin and Munising.

Manistee started the day with a 72-6 loss to Kingsley and a 54-29 loss to Gladwin.
