KINGSLEY — For a
coach who thought his team had lost
all three of its matches, Manistee
wrestling coach Chris Codden was
upbeat about the Chippewas’
performance in a team tournament on
Saturday. So, when he went back
and recalculated the scores on
Sunday and realized his team
actually beat Munising, it only made
his weekend better. “I thought we
had won,” said Codden, recalling his
skepticism about the way the match
was scored. “I’m even happier now.”
Codden said what was originally
scored as a 42-37 win for Munising,
was actually a 43-42 victory for
Manistee. He cited six wins by pin
(worth six points each), a win by
Travis Bulerski that was worth four
points and a Caleb Bailey victory
that was worth three points.
“You can’t lose when you have eight
wins,” he said. “I thought they had
the wrong score.” Saturday’s
tournament was supposed to have
seven teams, but three were unable
to make it because of the severe
weather, leaving just Manistee,
Kingsley, Gladwin and Munising.
Manistee started the day with a
72-6 loss to Kingsley and a 54-29
loss to Gladwin.

However, Codden said there was plenty of positive to take from those
defeats. He cited the Stags’ experience-laden roster and his wrestlers’
ability to hold their own against their opponents. “They’ve got an
enormous amount of talent,” Codden said of Kingsley. “The majority of
our team made it to the third period. That’s an unbelievable feat in
itself.”
The co-op Chippewas also improved against Gladwin, which beat
Manistee 69-12 a week before.
“I was really happy with our kids,” Codden said. “We had a lot of
bright moments. I couldn’t have been happier with the improvements and
the way the team sticks together.”
Leading the way for Manistee was Bailey, who went 3-0 on Saturday,
with two wins at 119 pounds and the other at 125. Alex Waterman (215)
went 2-0, Nick Carter (125/130), Tyler Fogarty (140) and Cody Polcik
(215) all went 2-1, while Kara Gunia (119) and Jon Hogiev (152) and
Travis McKenney all finished 1-0.
Jesse Kelley (152) went 1-1, Alex Meyers (103), Dakota Girard (135),
Travis Bulerski (160), Nathan Rybicki (189) and Raul Torres
(heavyweight) all finished 1-2.
Also for Manistee, Cody Edwards (152) and Zach Paine (heavyweight)
both finished 0-1, Tucker Bruce (130), Brandon Morrill (152), Seth
Schnieder (152), Dan Wehrmeister (160), Tyler Knudsen (171) all finished
0-2, while Brian Fisk (112), Luke Fogarty (145) and Tyler Kniss (152)
all went 0-3.
Manistee will next be in action when it hosts Mid-Michigan Wrestling
foes Traverse City Central and Benzie on Wednesday night. |
