FARWELL — With the bus
leaving at 5:30 a.m., the Manistee High School wrestling team had its
earliest wake-up call of the season so far.
But, the early-rising Chippewas made the best
of the trip with two team wins and four individuals taking home medals
in a 15-team tournament at Farwell on Saturday.
“It was a good day,” said Manistee coach
Chris Codden.
Manistee went 2-3 on the day and finished
fourth in the gold division. The co-op Chippewas lost to Newaygo
(52-27), Gladwin (69-12), and Forest Hills Central (63-9), and beat
Harrison (54-27) and Breckenridge (54-30).
Manistee was competing with five of their
regular wrestlers out, and replaced by JV members. “We went into every
match knowing we were probably going to be giving up 30 points,” Codden
said. “But, the JV kids taking the spots had won wrestle-offs to get to
earn that spot and surprisingly, we had some wins out of it.”
Taking home silver medals for the
Chippewas were Caleb Bailey, Nick Carter and Raul Torres. Bailey went
4-1 at 119 pounds, Carter was 3-2 at 125/130 and Torres was 4-1 as a
heavyweight. |

Tucker Bruce, who wrestled at 130, was
awarded a coaches’ medal for the best finish after going 1-3. “He was in
every match until the last minute,” Codden said. “He never gave up.”
Nathan Rybicki (189) and Cora Guina both
went 1-0, Jesse Kelley (145) and Trevor Schwandt (171/189) went 2-2,
Brandon Morrill (152/160) went 1-1, Brian Fisk (112), Jon Hogiev
(145/152), Dan Wehrmeister (160) and Alex Waterman (215) all went 1-2.
Also for Manistee, Alex Meyers (103) and
Tyler Kniss (152/160) both went 1-3, Dakota Girard (135), Cody Edwards
(140) and Tyler Knudsen (171/189) all finished 1-4, while Travis
McKenney (103/112) and Jordan Cross (215) both went 0-2.
Manistee will wrestle at Manton on
Wednesday night and Codden said he’s expecting to have his full varsity
lineup in place. |
