Chip Wrestlers Pick up
First Win
Bailey earns 100th career victory

PINE RIVER: From Staff Reports Manistee News Advocate — The Manistee High School wrestling team picked up its first win of the season in a six-team tournament at Pine River on Saturday. The co-op Chippewas opened the tournament with a 48-21 victory over Traverse City St. Francis. “It was a good win to start the day with,” said Manistee coach Chris Codden.

After defeating St. Francis, the Chippewas lost to Pine River (72-9), Mio (67-12), Montrose (72-12) and Kingsley (66-15). Pine River won the tournament.

Codden said the losses were a result of a lack of experience, mostly in the higher weight classes.  “We don’t have a lot of experience at 140 (pounds) and up,” he said. “It’s just practice and experience that we need to get more of.”

Manistee senior co-captain Caleb Bailey medaled at 119 pounds by going 5-0, with four wins by pin and another on points. He also picked up the 100th win of his career, and is now 7-0 this season.  “It was a defining moment in his career,” Codden said. “Caleb is a proven wrestler and I can’t say enough about him.”
Also medaling for the Chippewas was freshman Tyler Fogarty, who went 3-2 at 140 pounds.  “It was a great test of Tyler’s skill,” Codden said. “Win or lose, he’s always interesting to watch.”

Freshmen Nick Carter and Brian Fisk both picked up their first varsity wins with the Chippewas. Carter went 2-3 at 125 pounds, while Fisk was 1-1 at 112 pounds and 0-1 at 103.

Luke Fogarty went 2-0 at 145 pounds before being moved up to 152, where he went 0-3. Alex Meyers went 1-2 at 103 pounds and 0-2 at 112, Travis McKenney went 1-0 at 103 and 0-1 at 112, Cora Brinkley went 1-4 at 135, Drew Peters (160) and Raul Torres (heavyweight) both went 1-3, Marie Digna (171) was 1-1, Tyler Kniss went 0-5 splitting time at 152 and 160, Cody Polcik was 0-4 splitting at 215 and heavyweight, Jesse Kelley (145) and Glen Hild (215) both went 0-2, while Tucker Bruce (130) went 0-4.

Codden was pleased with how his young team performed on Saturday, and said his wrestlers will continue to improve as they gain more experience.

“All in all, it was a good day,” he said. “We just look to do better as the season goes on.”
