Bulldogs sweep Portagers
MESICK 4/9/09 Onekama’s early-season record evened out Thursday night after
losing both games of a double-header to Mesick.
The Portagers (2-2) lost their first game, 5-4, after going into the
bottom of the last inning up by 4-0.
“Danny Gillespie was outstanding,” coach John Neph said of his starting
pitcher.
Gillespie pitched five 1-3 innings, giving up zero runs in the first
five.
“Gillespe pitched a tremendous game,” Neph said. “Maybe the best game
he’s pitched in his career here at Onekama. He did a good job holding
down a very good Mesick team. He just reached a point where I had to
bring brought in a relief pitcher.” |
Gillespie hit a two-out double in the top of
the sixth with the bases loaded to give the Portagers a four run lead.
But with the help of two home runs, in the last half of the final
inning, Mesick captured the victory.
“Mesick’s a good team and they hit their way
back,” Neph said. “Just like we won it last night with a walk-off home
run, we lost tonight by a walk-off,” he said of Mesick’s game-winning
two-run walk-off shot.
Onekama lost its second game of the double-header, 8-4.
The Portagers led 3-2 after the top half of the fourth, but Mesick
scored two runs in the bottom, and four more in the fifth.
The Portagers scored a run in the sixth, but it wasn’t enough for the
victory. Onekama plays its first conference game Monday against Big
Rapids CCA.
