Onekama tops CCA

BIG RAPIDS — Manistee News Advocate — The Onekama High School baseball team got back above .500 with a 12-2 win over Big Rapids Crossroads Charter Academy Monday.

The two teams were slated to play two games, but both agreed one was enough. “We all agreed it was a little cold to play a second,” said Onekama coach John Neph.

Dan Gillespie picked up the win on the mound after throwing 4 1-3 innings and recording 10 strikeouts, before Thomas Koon recorded the final two outs in the five-inning mercy.  “Danny pitched a great game,” Neph said. “We’ve been playing great ball early in the season.”

Offensively, Shawn Gonyon led the way for the Portagers (3-2, 1-0) with a 4-4 performance, Hunter Slade went 3-3 with an inside-the-park home run, Jared Miller went 3-3 and Zach Teachout had two hits.
