CUSTER -- Greg Gielczyk, sports editor Manistee News Advocate. Onekama couldn't recover from a slow start quickly enough in the first game of Thursday night's Western Michigan D League girls volleyball match at Mason County Eastern, and the Portagers struggled the rest of the night. The Cardinals, striving to stay in the hunt for the league title, wound up sweeping Onekama in three games.

After losing the first game, 16-25, the Portagers had everything go wrong in the second game. The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in rolling to a 25-7 victory. Onekama lost the third game, 15-25.

For the Portagers, Amber Maidens was the top server with seven points while she was at the line. Chelsea Bromley and Stacey Keith both served at 100 percent for the match.

Keith was the Portagers' top defensive player with 35 passes. Maidens had a solid night at the net with nine spikes, and Alyssa Cole contributed seven attacks.

Veronica Maidens did a nice job on defense at the net with seven blocks, and was the team's top setter for the match with 22. Keith had 19 sets and Ginny Ashworth 18.

"The team just couldn't put anything together," Onekama coach Lanette Keith said. "Our serving and defense really held us back."

Onekama's junior varsity team also lost to the Cardinals' reserves, 8-35 and 17-25. Paige Rutowski led the team in service points with five.

Anna Veverica was the team's best passer with 12, and Chelsea Miller had nine passes and two spikes.

The Portagers are off now until next Thursday, when they are at Walkerville in another WMD match.
