Gillespie pitches no-hitter for Portager softball

ONEKAMA, Greg Gielczyk– Stevie Gillespie pitched a no-hitter for Onekama in the first game of Thursday afternoon’s girls softball doubleheader against Bear Lake in an 11-1 win.

The Portagers also won the nightcap, 21-6, in a game that went the full six innings despite the final margin of victory, since Onekama led only led 12-5 going into the final inning.

"It’s just such a turnaround from last year," Onekama coach Duane Keith said. "Like the other day, we gave Brethren a great couple of games, and actually led in both of them.

"A year ago, the Bobcats mercied us in both games. So, you can see the girls have really improved in every facet of the game. I’m really proud of the girls for sticking with it."

Stacey Keith was 3-for-3 with two runs batted in for the Portagers. Ginny Ashworth also went 3-for-3 and had one run batted in, Bonnie Harthun was 3-for-4 with a run batted in, Stephanie Ashworth finished with one hit and a run bated in and Tara Lyman had one hit and one run batted in.

In the second game, Onekama scored nine runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Harthun had one double and a run batted in while going 3-for-4 at the plate. Keith was 3-for-5 with two runs batted in, Lyman also was 3-for-5 with three runs batted in and Stephanie Ashworth was 2-for-3. The Portagers play Baldwin in a non-league game at Bear Lake on Monday, April 24.
