April 27 Home vs Walkerville 4:00 OHS Softball: Softball splits two games. (report from Greg Gielczyk)
Playing on Brethren High’s field, Onekama High’s girls softball team split a Western Michigan D League doubleheader with Walkerville on Thursday. The Portagers lost the first game, 16-1, but came back to win the second game, 11-3.
Onekama got only four hits in the opener. Ginny Ashworth led the way, going 2-for-2. Kayla Pesko had a double, and Stephanie Ashworth had a base hit.
Game two was a completely different story, as the Portagers rapped out 10 hits — including a triple, and two doubles.
Bonnie Harthun was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple. Stacey Keith finished 3-for-3 with five runs batted in. Stephanie Ashworth was 1-for-3. Tara Lyman was 1-for-3 with a run batted in, winning pitcher Stevie Gillespie had a double and a run batted in, Chelsea Miller had one hit and a run batted in and Pesko had a base hit.
Onekama improved to 7-5 overall, and 5-3 in the conference. The Portagers are at Brethren again on Thursday, May 4, for a league doubleheader against Mason County Eastern. Photographs
May 4 Home vs MCE 4:30 OHS Softball:  MCE  Game One - The Portagers lost game to the powerhouse Cardinals 14-0 the error bug bit the Portagers  as 9 of the 14 runs were unearned- Ginny Ashworth had a pair of singles...and Stacey Keith added a single for the only Portagers hits.  Game two the Portagers lost 13-6... the Portagers lone hit was a single by Bonnie Harthun.  We had our chances to score but couldn't manage a hit when needed off the very tough MCE pitching staff. Photographs
May 8 Home vs MCC 4:30 OHS Softball: Photos The Portager lost both games of a double header to MCC... 8-3 and 7-1.  We just couldn't get any thing going with the bats...Even though we played much better than in the first meeting of the year.  Tara Lyman had 2 singles...Stephanie and Ginny Ashworth also had singles also for the games for the only hits.  We hit the ball hard but right at someone and their infield play was solid.  Same story for game 2...We hit some very hard shots but MCC made all the plays...Tara Lyman had our lone hit with a single.
May 10 Home vs Freesoil 4:30 OHS Softball: The error bug and base running mistakes cost the Portagers a win in the game one losing 10-9 to Mesick bulldogs.  The Portagers pounded out 16 hits with Bonnie going 3-4, Tara 2-3, Steph 3-4, Stacey and Kieran 2-4 and Ginny, Alyssa, Chelsea and Stevie all adding hits.  " Stevie pitched a very good game - Good enough to  win! "   In Game 2, pitcher Stevie Gillespie took a hard line drive to the knee forcing her to the bench.  Stacey Keith took the mound and pitched a great game leading the Portagers to a 7-2 win.  The Portagers had 11 hits with Bonnie, Tara, Steph, Alyssa and Kieran getting a pair of hits and Stacey adding a single.  Stacey pitched a great game and our defense played flawless behind our freshman hurler." May 24 at Pentwater
The Lady Portagers softball team ended the season in style last evening with a big double header sweep of the Falcons in Pentwater 9-5 and 16-6 in a 5 inning game. Stevie Gillespie was great on the mound pitching 2 complete games and 2 big wins. Tara Lyman led the offensive attack going 4-6 with 4 RBI . Bonnie Harthun went 2-5 with a triple and a pair of RBI. Ginny Ashworth added a pair of hits and Kristy Sievert had a big hit in the 2nd game to put the Portagers ahead for good. Stacey Keith had a hit and worked 7 walks out of a fine Pentwater pitching staff and scored 8 runs. Alyssa Cole, Stephanie Ashworth, also added base hits.

We played a solid game tonight: offense, defense and pitching. Stevie was great on the mound. Pentwater was the #2 team in the WMD conference having beaten league champion MCE earlier this year. I can't tell you how proud of all these girls I am . We were 1-17 last year and 1-11 in the conference. This year we finished at 7-5 in the conference and 10-10 overall. Our pitching and defense have improved 100% over last year..with Ginny Ashworth behind the plate. Stevie Gillespie on the mound. Bonnie Harthun at shortstop and Tara Lyman in left field we will have some huge holes to fill next year as these girls all graduate this year. But with Freshman pitcher/2nd baseman Stacey Keith & Chelsea Miller..Sophmores Alyssa Cole behind the plate and Kieran O'Conner at 3rd. Juniors Stephanie Ashworth at first , Kayla Pesko and Kristy Sievert in the outfield,  we have a good solid set of returning players. ...Coach Keith
