Bobcats Sweep Portagers in Softball

BRETHREN-- Hilary Hindman struck out 21 batters in the doubleheader as Brethren swept Onekama, 4-1 and 9-4, in Western Michigan D League girls softball action on Wednesday afternoon.

The Bobcats improved to 4-2 overall, and 4-0 in the conference. Onekama was coming off a pair of exciting wins over Baldwin, 10-7 and 14-13, on Monday.

Hindman fanned a career-high 11 in the first game for the Bobcats. She gave up just two hits, singles by Ginny Ashworth and Alyssa Cole for Onekama, while walking only one.

Stevie Gillespie was the Portagers' pitcher, and finished the game with eight strike outs.

Kassy Thomas led the Bobcats on offense with two hits in three at-bats. Tiffany Hindman was 1-for-2.

Nina Pickett scored a run and had one run batted in for the Bobcats. Brethren also got runs from Hilary Hindman, Stephanie Sampson and Tate Kern.

Hilary Hindman struck out 10 Portagers in the second game. Onekama had four hits, and had three other runners get on base with walks.

Sampson powered the Brethren offense, going 2-for-2 with a triple and two runs scored.

Thomas finished the game 1-for-1 with two runs scored. Hilary Hindman had a double in three at-bats and scored twice. Pickett went 1-for-2 with a run scored.

Jordan Williams was 1-for-4 and scored a run, while Kern finished 1-for-4 and scored a run. Tiffany Hindman collected a run batted in.

Bonnie Harthun led the Portagers at the plate in the second game, finishing 2-for-3 with two runs batted in. Stephanie Ashworth, Tara Lyman, Alyssa Cole and Ginny Ashworth had one hit apiece. Karen O'Connor had a double. Gillespie struck out five in six innings.

Onekama swept Baldwin in a league doubleheader the 13th. In the first game, Chelsea Miller made a diving catch in the outfield to save the game after the Panthers had rallied from a 5-0 deficit to briefly take the lead.

The Portagers trailed Baldwin, 8-0, after the first inning of the nightcap. But, they came back, scoring the winning run in the last inning when O'Connor walked, advanced on a passed ball and scored on Harthun's inside-the-park home run."Harthun is a sprinter in track, and she was flying around those bases," Onekama coach Duane Keith said.

For the doubleheader, Lyman paced the offense, going 6-for-8 with five runs batted in. Harthun was 2-for-6 with the two runs batted in, and Ginny Ashwroth finished 2-for-4 with a run batted in. Stephanie Ashworth went 1-for-7 with two runs batted in, and Gillespie finished 1-for-5 with three runs batted in.
