Barbara Jordan

          Barbara Jordan had an important role in African American history. Barbara Charlie Jordan but for short was called Jordan she was bourn February 21, 1936 in Houston, Texas. She went to college at Texas southern university to become an attorney. She was not married and did not have kids. Her role in African American history was that she was the third African American woman to be licensed in Texas. Jordan ran for the Texas house of represenentives in 1962 and 1964. By her being there she won to be senate in taxes in 1966. That made her the first African American state senator since 1883 and she was also the first black woman to serve in that body. She was re-elected to a full term as senate in 1968. She served as senate until 1972. She was also the first African American female to serve as president pro term of state senate and then served for one day as acting governor of taxes in 1972. Some interesting facts are that she was govern of Texas pulse served as president pro term and was in office 1973-1979. Sadly she died on January 17, 1996 in Austin, Texas when she was 59 years old.             

 

Fredrick Douglass

Fredrick Augustus Washington Bailey Douglass had a nice roll in 

African American history. Fredrick Douglass was born on February 14th 1818 in the United States. He died February 20th 1895 in Washington dc. Fredrick had five children and was married. He was taught by his grandmother for his education. His occupation was an Author, and editor, and a diplomat. Two interesting facts about Fredrick Douglass are that he was born as a slave and then escaped slavery at the age 21. he escaped slavery in Maryland and moved to New York then to Massachusetts where he soon became an international figure in the fight against slavery. Fredrick was the first African American citizen appointed to offices of high rank in the U.S. government. He is the best African American you could ever pick.

 

Ernest Davis

          Ernest Davis was very unique. He was born in New Salem Pennsylvania on December 14, 1939. Ernest was also known as Ernie or the express. He went to Syracuse University, and played football there. When he played football there he got the hiesman trophy. He was the first African American to get the hiesman trophy. When he was done with collage he went to pro football. He played for the Cleveland browns, but he didn’t play for long. When he was only 23 he was diagnosed with leukemia, and died May 18, 1963 in Cleveland lakeside Hospital.

James Earl Jones

James Earl Jones was a famous actor in African American history. James was born on January 17, 1931 in Arkabutla, Mississippi. He hasn’t died yet, but he is about 81 now. He isn’t married at this time. His grandparents raised him tell he graduated. His parents separated before he was born. James went to college at the University of Michigan. He plays the voices of many people in many movies. He also acts as many characters in many movies too. James was a famous actor. These are some interesting facts about James. He played the voice of Darth Vader in the movie Star Wars. James won two Tony awards, three Emmys, a Grammy, and An Oscar nomination. James Earl Jones is a good actor. 

 

James Baldwin

James Baldwin was a great African American. He was born August 2, 1924 in New York. James Baldwin was not married and he only had a mother with no kids. James only went to high school in New York and he didn’t go to collage. His occupation was a maid and he wrote novels. His role in African American History was he fought for the civil rights. James was the oldest of nine people in America. James wrote novels for 17 years. Then he became an author. James Baldwin died in a mental hospital December 1, 1987 in France. James was a good African American.

Oprah Winfrey

          Oprah Winfrey played an important role in African American History. She was born in Mississippi in 1954. She isn’t married. Oprah skipped kindergarten and went right to first grade. Then she skipped second grade and went on to third. She is a talk show host in Chicago. She helps people deal with their lives. Oprah won an Oscar nomination for her role by starring in the film called “The Color Purple.” She has so many interesting facts. One interesting fact is she is the highest paid actor and entertainer in the world. She was crowned Miss Black Tennessee. She hosted a huge talk show called “AM Chicago.” Oprah then had her show expanded to the “Oprah Winfrey Show.” Her show usually has 15 million people that watch everyday. Oprah went on to become the youngest and first black person to anchor the news in Nashville, TN. Her net estimated is worth 250 million dollars. After a year Oprah’s show became the number one talk show taking out the “Phil Donahue Show” in 1984. Oprah is so important in African American History.

 

Althea Gibson

           Althea Gibson was born in Silver, SC on August 25, 1927. Althea Gibson as a child was very poor. She moved to New York at the age of three. She always got into fights in the rough city ether if it was a fight with a boy or a girl. She always held her own when she got into fights. As a child Althea Gibson would frequently run away from home. Althea Gibson went to high School but she soon dropped out of high school. Althea Gibson played table tennis but she soon was introduced to tennis. She then went to U&M University in Florida for a tennis scholarship. She was trained to play tennis and she also got a partner her name was Angela Buxton. Soon after Althea Gibson became the first African American to win Championships at Grand slam tournaments like Wimbledon, the French Open, the United States open, and the Australian doubles. She was the first black person to be elected for Associated Press and Female Athlete of the year. After retiring from tennis Althea Gibson started to play golf for a few years. She then also became the first black person to join the Ladies Professional Golf Association. Althea Gibson after playing tennis and golf suffered a stroke. Althea had no money left to pay for medication. So one day she called Buxton her tennis partner. She told her that she didn’t have any money. So later Buxton made a call to a tennis magazine saying that Althea didn’t have any money. Buxton didn’t tell Althea about the call she made. One day all of a sudden Althea’s mail box started filling up with money. Althea then had enough money to get the medication and all the other things that she needed. Althea Gibson died on September 28, 2003 she was 76 years old she died in a hospital in East Orange, N.J.

 

Jesse Owens

Jesse Owens had a part in the African American. Jesse Owens did have a full name. His full name was James Cleveland Owens. He was born on the day September 12, 1913. Jesse Owens died on the day March 31, 1980. Jesse Owens was not married. At his age the Owens family moved to Cleveland in Ohio. When Jesse was given a nickname Jesse. Jesse Owens went to junior high and High School. He was setting records for his age group. Jesse Owens went to state university student.  Jesse Owens got 4 gold medals in the 100 meters to 200 meters, 400 meters. Jesse Owens was a great person. 

Ida B. Wells Barnett

      Ida B. Well Barnett was an African American. She was born on July 16, 1862 in Holly springs, Mississippi. Ida B. Wells Barnett married Ferdinand L. Barnett. Was a Chicago lawyer, an activist, and a editor. Ida B. Wells Barnett was the co-founder of the NAACP. Her role in African American history was she fought for the equal rights of people of color and women. Two interesting facts are she was the co- founder of the NAACP and was a famous black female journalist of her time. Ida B. Wells Barnett died on March 25, 1931 in Chicago, Illnois. 

Jimi Hendrix

Jonny Alex Hendrix known as Jimi Hendrix was born in Seattle Washington November, 27 1942. Jimi Hendrix got kicked out of school at the age of 13 and went to the U.S army. His occupation was playing guitar at concerts and with many bands. Jimi Hendrix role in African American history was that he was one of the best guitar players in history. one interesting fact about him was that his father taught him to play an acoustic guitar, another interesting fact is that he played in over 26 bands. Then sadly he died 1969 with a drug overdose. Jimi Hendrix played an awesome role in African American history.

 

Tiger Woods

Tiger woods is a real respected American African. Tiger Woods real name is Eldrich Tont Woods and his nickname is Tiger.  Tiger Woods was born in December 30, 1975 in Cypress California. He now lives in Windermere, Florida.  Tiger woods is married to Elin Nordegren. They have two kids named Charlie and Sam. Tiger Woods went to collage at Stanford University for two years. Tiger Woods only job is a pro golfer. Tiger Wood woods play a roll in African American History because; he is the first African American to play pro golf. He rank 1 in the Nation. He is the most successful golf player of all time. Tiger Woods has won 89 tournaments. 1996 Tiger Woods turn pro in golf. In 2007 he won an estimation of $122 million dollars. Tiger Woods is a very famous person.    

 

Charles W. Follis

           Charles W. Follis played an important role in African American history. He was the first African American to play professional football and receive pay. His occupation is to play football. Charles W. Follis played football for Wooster High School. Charles W. Follis’s nickname was the Black Cyclone from Wooster. He was born February 3, 1879. He was born in a town called Cloverdale, Virginia. A interesting fact about him is after football he became a professional baseball player. Another interesting fact is he died from pneumonia. He died April 5, 1910. Charles W. Follis played an important role in African American history.

 

George Washington Carder

I am doing a paper on George Washington Carver. He was born in 1865 and he died at 1943. He was married to Morgan carver he had some children. He had no early education. Later in life he went to Iowa  State  Collage. He’s occupation was he was a slave before he was a scientist.  His role in African American  history was  carver was the discover of hundreds of  products from peanuts, sweet potatoes, pecans, and soybeans. Two Interesting facts of George Washington Carver was a slave owned by Susan and Moses carver. After he was free from a slave he became one of the worlds best scientist. He was a very great African American.              

George Washington Carver

George Washington Carver played an important role in African American history. Carver was born in Diamond Grove, Missouri in 1860. He was born with parents as slaves. He was saved by confederate kidnappers. G.W.C. began school when he was twelve. He later attended the Simpson College in Iowa. Carter soon transferred to Iowa Agricultural College so he could study science. When George graduated he teached at Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute for Negroes. Carter was never married. George W. Carver developed 325 ways to use a peanut. One use of peanuts carver invented ranged from cooking oil to printer ink. Carver donated his life savings to encourage agricultural research. His birthplace became a national monument in 1953. George Washington Carver died on January 5, 1943.

Thurgood Marshall

Thurgood Marshall was born on July 2, 1908. He had spelled his name shorter but he shortened it in Elementary school. He did not have a family and he was not married. In 1930 Marshall graduated from Lincoln University in Chester Pennsylvania. He got his law degree from Howard University. He was lower in the Supreme Court. In 1961 after lots of success as a lower and fighting judges for the rights of woman and Africans. He continued to fight until he retired on June 27, 1991 after severing for 24 years. He was vary helpful to others. He was the first African in Supreme Court. He died of heart failure at the age of 84 years old. He was barred the same place most people in Supreme Court were barred.  He was a great leder for Africans.

                  

Mathew A. Henson

          Mathew A. Henson was born in Maryland, August 8th, 1886. He played an outstanding role in African American History. He was the first African American to reach the North Pole. He was married to Lucy Henson. He explored the North Pole with a man named Robert E. Perry. Perry recruited Henson on a merchant ship when he saw his strength. He got his education on the merchant ship working as a cabin boy. Shortly after the expedition to the North Pole Henson died of old age. He was 91 years old when he died. His death date is march, 9th 1955.

Paul Robinson

          Paul Robinson is a very interesting African American. He was born on April 9, 1898 in Princeton, New Jersey. He died on Monday March 3, 2009.  He was 102 years old. That was so amassing thing. He never married anyone. Isn’t that said? He’s Education was from Rutgers Collage. He’s jobs were a football player, lingurst, and actor and singer. A linguists is a person who languages. He’s role in African American history was He is one of the first African American singers. Here are two interesting facts. He played 137 games and Kick 147 goals. Paul Robinson is a very festinating African American.

Jackie Robinson

Jackie Robinson played a huge role in Major League Baseball. Jack Roosevelt Robinson was born in Cairo, Georgia on January 31, 1919. When Jackie was 8 he moved to Pasadena, California. He got his nickname from his sister calling him “Jackie”. When Jackie was 18 hear went to UCLA. When he was there he met Rachel. On February 10, 1946 he married Rachel. He had 3 children Jack JR, Sharon, and David. On April 18, 1946 Jackie was put on the Brooklyn Dodgers. A Major League Baseball Team. Jackie played for the Dodgers for 10 years. In those ten years he earned Rookie of the year in 1947, led the league with his batting average of .342 in 1949, played in six world series, voted mvp in 1949, and was the first African-American to be put in the baseball hall of fame in 1962. Jackie died on October 24, 1972. Jackie Robinson played a large role in African-American history and rights.

 

Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks was a very good African American. She was born February 4th, 1913 in Tuskeegee, Alabama. Rosa Parks was married to Raymond Parks. They had no children. She went to Highlander Folk school in Tennessee. Her occupation was the Civil Rights Activist. Rosa Parks role in African history is that on December 1st, 1955, a Montgomery bus driver tolled Rosa Parks to give up her seat to a white man. When she refused she was fined and arrested. Rosa Parks had been the secretary of the Montgomery, Alabama, for the advancement of colored people and was a tailor’s assistant at the Montgomery fair store. Other local woman were also fined and arrested for violating segregation laws including Aurelia S. Browser, Mary Louise Smith, Claudette Colvin, and Susie McDonald. Two interesting facts about Rosa Parks is that she suffered from dementia and became embroiled. Her husband was a barber. Her and her husband moved from Montgomery, Alabama to Hampton Virginia then she finally moved to Detroit. Rosa Parks died October 24th, 2005. Rosa Parks was a very interesting person.

 

Martin Luther king J.R

Martin Luther king J.R was born in 1979 on January 15. He marred Curette Scott and they had no children. He went to college and got a doctors degree. King J.R occupation was a minister. Martin Luther king J.R was the mean civil right leader. He stud up for rights and he didn’t solve anything with vilious. A cool fact about his is he has his own holiday. Martin got assonated on 1968. King J.R was a smart and intelligent man.  

 

Elijah McCoy

          Elijah McCoy had an important role in African American history. Elijah McCoy was born on May 2, 1844 in Colchester, Ontario, Canada. He married Ann Elizabeth Stewart. He married her in 1868. Ann had died four years later. Elijah remarried Mary Eleanor Delaney. Elijah was a Mechanical engineer in Edinburgh, Scotland. Then he moved to Detroit, Michigan, USA. Elijah’s job was an inventor. McCoy opened his own company in 1920. His company’s name was the Elijah McCoy Manufacturing Company. Elijah McCoy’s role in African American history was to invent things. His first invention was the Lubricating Cup. It was used in steam cylinders of the trains. Some of McCoy’s other inventions were the ironing bored and the lawn sprinkler. During McCoy’s lifetime, he was 

 

Barack Obama

          Barack Obama was born on August 4, 1961. He is the 44th president of the United States. Barack Obama is the first African-American president. His father was from Kogelo Kenya and his mother is from Kansas.

In 1983, Obama worked as a community organizer in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1991. Barack Obama has written two books. One is in 1995called, Dreams from My Father and one in 2006 called, The Audacity of Hope. He is married to Michelle Robinson and has two daughters.

          Barack Obama was born in Hawaii and now lives in the White House as are first African-American president.

Harriet Tubman

          Harriet Tubman has an interesting part in African American History. Harriet Tubman was known as Minty. She was born 1820. She was born at Donchester County, Maryland. On March 10, 1913 she was buried in Auburn, New York, U.S.A. She was married to John Tubman. She had a child. Her Childs name was Gertie. Her child was adopted. She never went to school when she was a little girl. Her occupation was a slave, Civil War nurse, and Suffragette. Her role in African American History was she helped stop slavery so African American can be free from slavery. Two interesting facts are she died of Pneumonia. She helped let African Americans do what they want to do without being told. Harriet Tubman was an interesting African American.

Elijah McCoy

          Elijah McCoy is an important person in African American History. He was born in 1843 or 1844 at Colchester, Ontario, Canada. McCoy’s parents were former slaves. He learned to be a mechanical engineer in Edinburgh, Scotland. McCoy could only get a job as a fireman or an oilman when he moved to the U.S. He did not have a family of his own. When McCoy moved he moved from Scotland to Detroit, Michigan. He invented an automatic lubricator. In 1920 McCoy started his own company called the “Elijah McCoy Manufacturing Company.” McCoy died in 1929 as a famous person. Elijah McCoy is a very important person in African American History.

          Rosa Parks had a role in African American history. Rosa Parks’s role was a very important role. Her role was using her civil rights on a bus boycott. She refused to give up her seat to a white man so she was arrested. After a few years she got out of jail and got married. She got married to Raymond December 18th 1932. They got married outside Rosa Parks’s mom’s house. Rosa was born in Tuskegee Alabama on February 4th 1913. While she was growing up her mom home schooled her till she was about 11 years old. After she was 11 her mom sent her to a school in Montgomery for girls. Even though she got married but did not have children. Rosa Parks’s full name was Rosa Louise McCauley. She died on October 24th 2005. Rosa Parks had a very good role in African American history!

 

Carter G. Woodson

Carter G. Woodson had a nice role in African American history. Carter G. Woodson’s real name is Carter Godwin Woodson. He was called the father of black history. He was born in Buckingham County in Virginia 1875. He was married and had kids James and Eliza. Woodson went to school at Douglass High School and graduated. Then he was a teacher and a principal at Howard University. He taught black students at Howard University, and District Columbia’s public Schools. Woodson’s house was at Nwin Washington on 1538 Ninth Street. Carter had published a book that became the nucleus of his first book in 1915 in April. Carter Godwin Woodson had a good role in African American history.

 

Oprah Winfrey

          Oprah played a role in African American history. Oprah’s full name is Oprah Gail Winfrey. She was born on January 29th 1954 she is now 55 years old now. She was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, United States. Oprah is straight which is pretty hard to believe. This means she has no husband or boyfriend and Oprah has no children. Oprah attended State University she studied arts. Oprah graduated in 1976. Her occupation is that she is a talk show host and Oprah has a very powerful voice which means everybody listens to her. Oprah’s role in African American history is that she was the first African American to host a talk show. Two interesting facts about Oprah are that Oprah rated the richest African American of the 20th century. Oprah also was once the worlds only black billionaire. Oprah is truly an amazing person.

         

Magic Johnson

Magic Johnson was a pro basketball player. He was born August 14, 1959. Magic Johnson is married to Cookie Johnson. He went to Michigan State University college. His occupation was to be a pro point guard. He played for the Los Angeles Lakers. He was six foot nine inches. His role in African American history is he was one of the 50th best basketball players in the NBA history. Earvin(Magic)Johnson was drafted to the L.A. Lakers in 1979. Another interesting fact is that Magic Johnson led Michigan State to the NCAA title in 1979 the same year he was drafted to the Lakers. Magic Johnson was a really good basketball player.

 

Bruce B.K.

Bruce B.K played an important role In African American history.  Bruce’s real name is Blanche Kelso Bruce. He was born on March 1st 1841 near Farmville, Virginia Prince Edward County. He died in 1898. He had never gotten married nor had any children. He had 11 brothers and sisters including him. He also had one half brothers that was educating him. He later went to Oberlin College in Ohio and then went to Tyler School of Art University. His occupation was he worked in slavery near Farmville, Virginia. His role in African American history was the first Black person to serve a full term in the United States senate, and devotedly to gain rights for African Americans. One fact is his Father was white and owned a plantation that his mom worked on and his mom was black. Another fact is he received 11 votes for vice president. Bruce was a great person.       

 

James Earl Jones

James Earl Jones was born 1931 in Mississippi. He was raised by his grandparents. When he was five he moved from Mississippi to Michigan. He went to the University of Michigan. He was an actor. He did the voice of Darth Vader and Mufasa. His Role in African American History is he is one of the most famous actors of all. One interesting fact is he does the voice of Darth Vader in Star Wars and Mufasa in the Lion King. Another interesting fact is he moved to Manistee when he was five. James Earl Jones is still alive.

 

Martin Luthren King Jr.

          Marin Luthren King Jr. was an amazing African American person. Martin Luthren King Jr. was born January 15th, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1948 Martin Luthren King Jr. graduated from Morehouse collage. In 1953 Martin got married to Coretta Scott and they had four kids Yolanda, Dexter, Bernice, and Martin III. Martin’s first job was a minister for a Baptist church. Martin Luthren King Jr. is known as Dr.King. His Roll in African American history was he had a speech called “I have a dream”. The speech meant he wanted the whites to get along with the black and the black to get along with the white. One interesting fact about Martin Luthren King Jr. is that they named a holiday after him. They named a holiday after him because he made a new right that black and white are the same know difference. Another Interesting fact is he was the youngest person to accept a Nobel Prize. Martin Luthren King Jr. died April 4th 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee.  

 

Maggie Lena Walker

     Maggie Walker took an amazing role in African American history. She was born July 15, 1867 in Richmond, Virginia. She was born into a slaved family. She went to school and graduated in 1886. She got to Armstead Walker and had three sons, but sadly one died when it was a baby. Maggie walker started her own bank and became the first woman to become a president of a local bank. Maggie Walker suffered diabetes and tripped over her steps and had to be in a wheel chair for the rest of her life. Maggie Lena Walker Died December 15, 1934 in Richmond, Virginia. She had a sad and happy life.     

 

Matthew Henson

          Mathew Henson had an important role in African American history. Mathew Henson was born August 8, 1866. Matthew Henson did not get married. His occupation was working for Robert E Perry. Matthew Henson was the first African American to ever go to the North Pole. He got a congressional medal. Matthew Henson also worked on two ships as a child and a teenager. The names of the ships were Katie and Hines. Matthew Henson died March 9, 1955.

          Barack Obama is a famous African American. Barack Obama was born in Hawaii. He had a fun time in his child hood. He married a girl name Michelle. He and Michelle had two kids named Sasha, Milia. Obama went to collage at Occidental in Los Angeles, California. His job is to be the president of the United States of America. He is doing a good job being a president. His role in Black history is he is the first African American President. That is pretty cool that he is the president. Two interesting facts about Barack Obama is that he won the Grammy in 2006 for best spoken word recording. It was for the audio version of his books. He also experimented with drugs. Barack Obama plays an important role in African American.
